It's not bad at all. In fact, it's pretty damned good. It should have done better in box office, but Disney really fricked the marketing of it.

It has killed in "second run" (premium movie channel showings, DVD rental/sales).

$300 million domestic and worldwide. It's budget was $220 million not counting marketing.

Production was $209 everywhere I'm seeing.

So it made almost $100 million over its production budget. Even if they spent most of that on marketing, that you still have merch, rentals, DVD, etc. Battleship made money, no doubt.

Jack and the beanstalk. A 2 minute story.

It was even lame when they used it as the basis for the Puss in Boots movie. They either needed to Disneyfy the hell out of it and aim it young kids or leave it alone.

Yep, John Carter is a fun flick.

I honestly thought it would be a lot worse than it was.

its about the aliens from Independence Day using Decepticon tech in the ocean near Hawaii to battle outdated US Navy battleships.

Forbes article $220m

here's another link though that confirms your $209 million and gives a number of $110 million in marketing.

LINK

Going with the $209 million production budget, it made $302 million, so it would have to pull in $17 million in DVD to break even.

But that's why the link in the OP places Jack the Giant Slayer on a scale inbetween Battleship and John Carter.

When will studios learn that not every story deserves hundreds of millions of dollars invested in CGI?

When the other 25 CGI fests stop making $200 million in profit.

Good. They need to quit doing this shite. It was funny for a while, until I realized that they were really serious.

meanwhile the Transformers series tore it up b/c it had MUCH better spots that made the concept seem exciting even those movies are complete trash.

No, it tore it up because it has big, explosiony robots and foreigners eat that shite up.

That's a huge reason for the current shitty state of major motion pictures, btw. They're always thinking about "the foreign market." Ergo, robots.

It wasn't. Tim Riggins can't carry a movie of that magnitude. The martian princess was super hot though

I thought it was a decent movie. It was a victim of bad advertising and a dumb name.

It was ok, there's much worse out there

Saw this coming from the first preview and the fact that its been delayed by 2 fricking years. 2013 is going to be a shite year, so it's the best time to release a high budget shite film.

And what's not to like about that?

In all seriousness, went into that movie with zero expectations, and enjoyed it for what it was: Friday Night Lights on the ocean

John Carter was entertaining and pretty good for the most part...the first half was better than the second half.

But I agree that Tim Riggins can't carry or lead a movie.

Battleship was retarded.

This. The first half of the movie actually had me laughing pretty hard and enjoying it.

I thought JC was easily the best of the bunch and had the worst campaign by far. Literally the only thing I knew about it from the ads were JC could jump really high and there were alien looking things living in a desert. The fact that they barely pimped that it was from a long running books series was baffling.

Yeah, I had no idea John Carter was an Edgar Rice Burroughs story. I caught the first part of it and it was much better than I expected. I'd like to watch the whole thing if I can find another decent site for streaming movies.
