I always wondered how much Lucas would have gotten for Star Wars if he had never done the prequels.

People say, oh well...it would have had more mystique and been worth more by not turning off large portions of the fanbase.

But Disney was probably sold on the fact that the movies can suck and will still make billions worldwide.

So the prequels while paling in comparison to the orginals were in reality the blockbusters in the bigger picture. That was the best decision he ever made; made him ungodly rich...and it convinced Disney that this franchise is suck-proof.

Well...now that's up for debate again...with Solo after the TLJ (which still made billions worldwide despite being a terrible movie.)

It will be interesting to see if the franchise continues to be moths to a flame or people have given up and moved on.

It's the MCU for me. Star Wars still has the OT to fall back on.

I think we all can agree that SW and ESB are greater than anything in the MCU, but those movies are almost 40 years old now and over half of all Star Wars movies are objectively bad at this point. I have to look at the Star Wars universe like The Matrix and pretend like most of the movies don’t exist.

Lucas created a new universe with the original trilogy. That universe as expressed in the OT is what is endearing to those off us that grew up with it. And it’s why we’re pissed at what’s been done afterward...even by Lucas.

You can’t compare this with the LOTR because Jackson didn’t create that universe.

A better comparison would be if some clowns wrote prequels and sequels to the LOTR that screwed it all up. Would that negate from the original work? Absolutely not.

the most overrated franchise

WTF?

How can you possibly be overrated, when you make 10 movies, and 9 are among the highest grossing in history? Half of them are in the top 25. And Solo would be there eventually, if it wasn't being punished for Kathleen Kennedy
quote:

DOMESTIC GROSSES
Adjusted for Ticket Price Inflation

2. Star Wars $1,631,575,500 1977
11. Star Wars: The Force Awakens $990,334,300 2015
13. The Empire Strikes Back $899,334,600 1980
16. Return of the Jedi $861,584,200 1983
18. Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace $827,258,600 1999
43. Star Wars: The Last Jedi $619,169,000 2017
60. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story $553,645,200 2016
67. Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith $543,413,200 2005
97. Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones $489,771,200 2002

Even their 'worst' movies are among the highest ever.

The more popular the product the easier it is for it to be overrated.

If only Lucas wasn't such a control freak and they had filmed the Jedi Academy trilogy right after Jedi we wouldn't have been exposed to so much misery.

Do you not know what overrated means? This is exactly why it’s an overrated franchise

I never had a burning desire to know what happened before or after the original Star Wars trilogy. There are plenty of side stories and characters I want to see more of from LOTR. Tolkien>>>>Lucas

Maybe you should have looked it up before starting this thread

Its factually the highest appraised franchise in movie history, but if youre talking anything other than tix and merch sales, then youre conclusions are based only on opinion. Because the value has clearly been established, and until than the TLJ debacle (see TFA, Rogue 1), the franchise was re-establishing its dominance

No it doesn’t. Great franchises stand the test of time. When you have to tell someone who is interested in the franchise to skip half the movies, or that half of them aren’t any good/average at best, it’s safe to say it’s overrated. I grew up on Star Wars.

Really?

Alien was a cinematic masterpiece. The rest of them have been kind of “meh”.

The original Texas Chainsaw Massacre was a masterpiece. The rest have been garbage.

That’s just the way films are. The more of them you make, the worse they generally get. It still doesn’t take away from the good ones.

he original trilogy is the foundation of this franchise. As we peel back the onion we find one disappointing film after another. Every some odd years fans get their hopes up that eventually one movie will be able to hold a candle to the original trilogy but in fact, with each episode we move further and further away from that greatness.
As a fan approaching 50, I'm going to have to agree with this. Star Wars (ep 4, or 'the original') was a visionary moment in film. Lucas had created the ultimate perfect space fantasy universe.

Errol Flynn style adventures, set against a backdrop of a futuristic civilization with evil sorcerors leading space nazis, while being contested by a motley group of daring fighter pilots, shady but good-hearted smugglers, and heroic knights. It was Flying Tigers + Casablanca + Robin Hood + King Arthur, all rolled up into a universe that would make Star Trek blush. Phasers and lasers? We don't need them, we have red and green tracers galore, and a fabulous sword made of light.
The amazing thing was that Lucas was able to pull it together into a coherent story.

Empire was maybe a better "movie", but it began to narrow things down, and in the process begin to cut away the imaginary adventures so many had created in their minds.

Jedi injected the Ewoks, and began the process of making things "cute", instead of just fun. There was nothing cute about the first two films, they weren't for toddlers. They were adventures for kids (boys) from 8 to 80.

Now, we all look to the next film to return to the original's promise, but that magic is gone. There are no more dashing adventures; hell the movies aren't even for boys anymore, they are neutered so that girls can get into them too (starts with the china-doll dressup of Amidala, then the 'dreamy romance' of her and Anakin, now it's loaded with Girl Power stuff). I don't say that from a sexist point of view, but from observing the shift of emphasis over the films.

Yes, the franchise is overrated. Like others have said, there are 2 films worth watching, the rest is fluff.

hardly

1) Nothing about the Darth Maul character was fluff
2) Neither was the Sith/apprentice backstory
3) Nor Palpatines back story (especially in light of the Snoke treatment)
4) The friendship of Obi and Qui-Gon was certainly not fluff
5) The stormtrooper back story wasn't either
6) Order 66 was a well done storyline
7) The turning of Anakin was required, but just needed a better actor
8) Yoda in combat was as thrilling as seeing Vader in Rogue One
9) Rogue One was a solid storyline, despite the obvious end path

Midiclorians, JarJar, etc were unnecessary plot devices, and the love story dragged on too long. But the potential of Eps 1-3 was short changed by Lucas, but could be easily rectified with some edits. A lot of good stories were told in 1-3 and R1

I think the prequels while riddled with holes were entertaining.

The newest ones are...I find them really hard to explain. Of course theres the SJW nonsense, but they completely lack the good vs evil spirit of the Star Wars lore. Its almost like the latest iterations hated a good vs evil story.

TLJ was almost nihilist.
