It’s time to realize Star Wars is the most overrated franchise in cinematic history

The original trilogy is the foundation of this franchise. As we peel back the onion we find one disappointing film after another. Every some odd years fans get their hopes up that eventually one movie will be able to hold a candle to the original trilogy but in fact, with each episode we move further and further away from that greatness.

Why do you all put yourselves through this heartache and settle for mediocre based on what was put out almost 40 years ago? I’m prepared for the dowvnvotes but many of you know I speak the truth.

Just curious....how old are you?

I think one’s feelings on Star Wars are directly related to how old they are.

No it doesn’t. Great franchises stand the test of time. When you have to tell someone who is interested in the franchise to skip half the movies, or that half of them aren’t any good/average at best, it’s safe to say it’s overrated. I grew up on Star Wars.

I think that it does. If you're a sci-fi/fantasy fan who grew up in a world without Star Wars, you saw it for the homage that it was. If you were a young kid when it came out, or grew up with your parents telling you it was the best thing ever, you're going to have a greater admiration for it.

Empire is the best movie ever made and Star Wars OT is the best trilogy ever made.

Lord of the Rings is better.

But I'd say Star Wars is a close 2nd.

I don’t think overrated is the right word. Even with the prequel trilogy, it still held high praise all over the world, because the prequels weren’t completely terrible movies. Good movies? No. But horrible? Wrong again.

It has undoubtedly taken a dive since Disney’s takeover, and that’s why I think you can’t say SW is overrated - the movies and shows that have come out recently aren’t even really Star Wars anymore. They’re marketing tools and money makers with the “Star Wars” label on them used by a greedy corporation headed by a woman who obviously doesn’t have the the best interests of the franchise in mind. To George Lucas’ credit, I doubt he would have fricked up a new set of movies this badly and blatantly disregarded the health of his brainchild.

If you would have said that Star Wars has become the most overmarketed, oversold, and exploited franchise ever, I would be in complete agreeance.

After TFA, I accepted that the OT was lightning in a bottle. The last 7 SW movies have failed to produce that same magic.

But I love the world Lucas (and McQuarrie) created so I don't want them to stop trying.. I won't get my hopes up, but maybe they'll get it right one day.

I've been saying this for years. I didn't even realize there was this Star Wars cult until the prequels came out. This whole series is based on nothing but nostalgia and toys.

Overrated just means not as good as commonly perceived. So something can still be considered good by someone despite that person also considering it overrated.

I would agree.

However, I would also say it’s less a trilogy and more a three part, 12 hour movie with intermissions between.

Episodes 4-6 are an entirely different entity from 1-3 and 7-9. I agree with you that the idea of feeling the need to continue on with the story before and after is overrated, but Star Wars through ROTJ from 1977 to 1983 will be hard to beat out as far as the mania surrounding the whole thing.

I was in junior high school when Star Wars (stop with the nerdist A New Hope bullshite. It's Star Wars)came out. The prequels killed any interest I had in the whole franchise. Haven't even been tempted to watch any of the latest iterations.

Hands down, the original 3 set the bar and the 6 or 7 since have done their damndest to knock those original 3 down. George Lucas had passion and drive in making those first 3, now it's just a paycheck. Especially, the 3 with the JarJar Binks (or whatever his name was). Those were garbage. The acting was atrocious by all parties and the story line was piss poor.

I'm not so sure its overrated.

The OT is highly rated and great. Prequels have mixed reviews and are mediocre.

Sequels are generally negative by fans and suck.

So the universe is in balance.

When start wars came out (in 1977), I wasn't born yet, but my brother and dad liked it, but then the first movie I ever went to was ET then the second one was Return of the Jedi. And after seeing that I became a Star Wars fan.

Then, of course the Phantom Menance came out in what? 1999? Followed by the Attack of the Clones then Revenge of the Sith. I will be honest, those 3 are my favorite Star Wars movies. While I don't think the prequels were that popular, I liked seeing how, what we knew already, came about.

Then from there, I was disappointed in all of the Star War movies that have come out after Revenge of the Sith. I thought Rouge and The Force Awakens sucked.. I was disappointed to the point I wasn't really excited about watching The Last Jedi, but when I did. It was better than the previous two (Rouge One and The Force Awakens).

With all that said, while I liked Star Wars as a kid and still keep up with it, I do think it is a bit overhyped. With that said, I think what made it become as big as it has was the fact that when the original movie came out, it was innovative. Some of the technology used to film it wasn't something seen in many movies, then when Empire Strikes Back came out and it was revealed that Darth Vadar was Luke's father.. That just brought the franchise to a whole different level.
