And I apologize for misunderstanding your point about Captain America and GotG. I thought you meant if the year had multiple comic book movies that it was a no go for you. You just meant he had to include those in his list. Which I would still say you could remove those movies and still have a very strong list of movies for that year.

also those were 2 of the best Marvel movies of all 23 of them.

He can't seriously think Winter Soldier and GotG1 are on the same level as Daredevil and Hulk.

His reply to his own OP clearly states the point he was attempting to make. Newsflash, it had nothing to do with best year for movies.

I understood OP's point completely which is why i posted a fairly recent (since hollywood has gone downhill) year with a better lineup than 2003.

Movies have been down the past few years (covid shutdowns didnt help) but there is still good stuff being released (Oppenheimer and Dune recently)

It's not out of the realm of possibility that 3 (or 4 if you count the last samurai) good movies end up coming out in the same year.

to get 6 like 2014 (7 if you really thought Gone Girl was as good as some people) would be much tougher.

1994 Still the Goat

It was an amazing year...Love so many of those movies...2nd best year in my mind would probably be 1962:

The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance
Lawrence of Arabia
To Kill a Mockingbird
Dr. No
Mutiny on the Bounty
Cape Fear
The Manchurian Candidate
The Music Man
How the West Was Won
The Longest Day
Birdman of Alcatraz
What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?
Harakiri
The Miracle Worker

That's a damn good year.

I don't know if there was any particular year in the 70s that killed it but man if Hollywood would collapse again, I would hope we see more stuff like we saw them. Smaller budget stuff that was more character focused.

Pirates becoming the phenomenon it did was an accident. Michael Eisner thought it would fail and though Johnny Depp’s performance would ruin the picture.

Ben Hur does stand the test of time. I don't think you can find a film person that disagrees.

Uh....i agree. thats why i brought it up. Standing the test of time suggests that a movie loses none of its quality as it ages. Not that people continue to talk about it. People are dumb in large groups.

You wont find a "film person" that puts POTC in the same breath as Last Samurai and M&C. Thats moving the goal posts. Go look at the post i responded to and apply that same logic.

Most people havent even seen Ben-Hur.

1982 is as well. Not going to do a full list but ET, Blade Runner, Tron, The Thing, and a ton of other stuff came out that year.

IIRC, there was a glut due to an expected writer’s strike that didn’t happen.

Ive only seen 2 of 6. Never heard of whiplash. Hear of ex machina, never even seen a trailer or clip/highlight. Nerds brag about interstellar but I've had no interest to watch it. Didn't even catch the 2 marvels until they were on netflix. Your 2014 list is pure shite by comparison.

Doesn’t sound like a typical MTV board poster.

Pirates and LOTR still look so so good. I’ve shown both to my sister in law recently and she was shocked they were made 20 years ago.

Practical effects and good production design will be prioritized by Hollywood again some day….
