Did you really just edit out where you said u had only seen 3 of the 6 films I posted?

Ive only seen 2 of 6. Never heard of whiplash.
Hear of ex machina, never even seen a trailer or clip/highlight.
Nerds brag about interstellar but I've had no interest to watch it.
Didn't even catch the 2 marvels until they were on netflix.
Your 2014 list is pure shite by comparison.
So you admit to not watching any of these but still call the list shite?
Remind me again why I should value your opinion about movies ever?

all of those movies in 2003 are classics that will stand the test of time.
The Last Samurai and Master and Commander are not "classics that will stand the test of time"
They're movies you liked but literally no one talks about them anymore in the same way that LOTR and POTC are discussed. MoC barely even made a profit.
If we devolve this into a "year where a lot of films held up well" thread, then 2014 and 2017 are two recent years that instantly come to mind.

Didn't Ex Machina come out in 2015?
Posted on 7/24/24 at 9:53 am to Corinthians420
Thank you for not including Birdman in your 2014 montage. Robbed Whiplash in broad fricking daylight.

Release dates
16 December 2014 (BFI Southbank)
21 January 2015 (United Kingdom)
IMDB has it listed as 2014

2003 was a solid year for film
Dodgeball came out the next year. Hollywood wouldn’t dare do that now.
Sad.

Agreed that movie was so overrated. Pretentious slop

Master and Commander is absolutely a classic. Just because it didn't do well at the box office doesn't mean it's a drop in quality. If that were the case The Big Lebowski is a low tier comedy and Blade Runner 2049 is a disappointing Sci Fi film.

2007 and 1999 are my favorite years in film

I thought The Last Samurai was the one that didn't belong in the OP

I don't disagree, but it definitely does not have the staying power implied in the OP.
You can tell if something is "iconic" based on if the average person will understand references to it without actually having seen it. I think LOTR and POTC definitely have this, but the other two don't.
I feel like OP doesn't understand what point he's trying to make

To be fair, 2003 also has Hulk and Daredevil. So would you rather those two or Captain America & GotG?
Notice how neither of those movies were used as examples of how good movies were in 2003?

well then people are retarded.
As someone who loves both LOTR and POTC (i saw every LOTR with my mom in theatre, will always be super special to me. Love ya mom. Also will never forget being on a family vacation and my mom and sister wanting to go shopping at a mall and giving me 20 bucks and i saw Italian Job and POTC b2b in theatre)
Last Samurai and M&C are the two best movies on that list. No single film will ever be "talked about" like franchise pieces haha. The masses are silly.
The Captain America franchise gets talked about more than Ben-Hur.....so what? That doesnt mean it "stands the tests of time" better.
Go watch Ben-Hur....its fricking mind-boggling.

Ben Hur does stand the test of time. I don't think you can find a film person that disagrees.
Look at my list from 1939. All of those are certified classics that you could teach about in any film class.
And I apologize for misunderstanding your point about Captain America and GotG. I thought you meant if the year had multiple comic book movies that it was a no go for you. You just meant he had to include those in his list. Which I would still say you could remove those movies and still have a very strong list of movies for that year.

I had no clue last samurai was held in this high of regard by anyone. Paul Mooney would like a word.
