I'll admit I've only seen a few episodes here and there so it's hard for me to get into it, but what does it have to do with British history?

Martin did extensive research into British history. The bulk of the story is inspired by Britain's War of the Roses. The Wall is a fantasized version of Hadron's Wall. The map of Westeros is basically Britain turned upside down. Etc, etc.

I'm not gonna be one of those dipshits that recommends you stick to Michael BaY movies. But, damn, you sound like you have serious ADD issues.

I have a friend who is going to loan me the audiobooks. Figured they are worth a listen to and from work.

It's better to read them. There is too much you miss with the audiobooks. Or maybe that's just me.

is it that obvious?

but honestly I dont think vikings is really better, but I do think that if they had the budget and freedom that GOT has, it would be significantly better.

and for you book readers of asoiaf, can you give me an indication of how long it will take for some of these plot lines to resolve themselves? At the end of season one, robb stark and the baratheons were vying for the iron throne, and the targaryen chick was trying to use her dragons to do the same. we're now a third of the way through season 3 - what has significantly developed about any of these plots? you can criticize my "taste" in tv shows if you like, but you guys are like the hard core LOTR fans who are basically arguing that each movie should have been 5 hours long, just so everything from the book could be included.

My point is, at some level, there needs to be sacrifice on content for the sake of keeping the audience entertained from episode to episode, and GOT just does a pretty poor job of that IMO.

at someone expecting epic fantasy story lines to be resolved in a timely manner. Don't you know we need truly experience the world the author has created? The minutiae is important ! Not the story!

Dude, the whole show is about vying for the iron thrones. When they resolve that it seems the show would end

I think this line sums it up. I don't think I have the patience or attention span for the fantasy genre in general.

Yet people absolutely love GOT which pretty much derails your theory of the audience not being entertained. I'd rather have a good story then some stupid fighting that makes no sense put into the story to please the 5 year olds.

When I was younger, I loved epic fantasy. I've read just about everything there is out there. I really can't stand it now, and it's not because I'm ADD or lack the attention span to stick with an 1,100 page book. I've just lost interest in what I consider poor storytelling -- not writing. I guess I got tired of reading about every dinner the protagonists have on their adventure. I got tired of 13 POV characters. I want tight storytelling. I want one POV. I want to experience the world through one character's eyes.

I guess that's why if I'm going to read fantasy I like Hobb, Zelazny, Butcher, and those guys.

I just lost interest in the Song of Ice and Fire. Honestly, it got boring...just like Wheel of Time.

Ragnar went from planning on going west to becoming the Earl in like 6 episodes.

You do realize that those episodes were basically over a years span??

Hell the last 2 episodes covered a 6 month time span.

It's not necessarily slow, but that's because all it shows is raiding and fighting. Doesn't show much of anything that happens between fighting.

And it got picked up for a 2nd season, but I would be shocked it Ragnar makes it to the 2nd season. They are flying through things because of how much time passes between each episode.

And no, Vikings is not better than GoT.

If you have read anything about Ragnar, you would know how he dies and who is responsible for his death. And what happens after he dies. Not as simple as just killing him off.

that will be a while. there's no one else who can really carry the show as of now unless you think they'll hand over the reigns of the show to his 7 year old son and rapey brother in season two.
