Vikings is my favorite show right now. I disagree with people who said it was slow. Ragnar went from planning on going west to becoming the Earl in like 6 episodes.

Dude, GOT is in the 3rd season and setting ratings records
GOT is truly an outstanding series but that designation is not determined by its ratings. TV has a long standing history of promoting garbage because of the ratings the garbage receives from viewers.

Vikings started off having to air next weeks episodes on Monday via digital because interest was so low.
Where would I begin to list the great shows that fell by the wayside because of a lack of audience.

I really like Vikings but GoT is on a completely different level.

For what it is, Vikings is doing extremely well.
Not on GOT level simply bc of budgetary restrictions but it is a very well made show.

I am not aware of another season. The next episode is likely the end
It was picked up for a second season. Getting really good ratings

No, but for a non-premium cable show it's pretty damn good.

but come on--writing, plot, acting, etc. are all hilariously bad for the most part.
Not really. Not at all, imo. Ragnar and Rollo are both solid and Gabriel Byrne was good in it, too. The plot jumps around to touch on certain parts of Ragnar's legend. I actually think it's pretty strong all around. I think they renewed it for another season, too.

I made the mistake of watching the first episode of Vikings with my 11 year old son. . . figured it was on the History channel so it couldn't be too bad.
(he loved it btw, and keeps asking me when we will watch the next episode)
As a fan of the ASoIF books for more than a decade, I looked forward to HBO's GoT and for the most part have enjoyed the series. Thankfully, it has gotten alot more people interested in the series, so hopefully GRRM can finally get around to finishing the series before he goes the way of Robert Jordan!
That being said, I still get a kick out of how the show so quickly attained "watercooler" status. It has a good story, a good budget and good actors, but people act as if it is the end-all, be-all of fantasy television.
Regardless of how good Vikings is, it will never reach the same pop-culture level as GoT has. Hell, I have friends who have stated outright that Vikings looks stupid and they "aren't into that sort of show", only to throw a GoT series premiere party a few weeks later
Herd mentality at its finest . . . hence the three separate GoT threads on here each week.

Ragnar and the crazy shipbuilder are some of my favorite TV characters right now.

Sums up GOT fanatics perfectly. I like that Vikings is rooted in history. The characters and events are real and the Vikings plagued Europe for hundreds of years.

Game of Thrones is a fairl realistic alternative to British history. There are quite a few parallels

I'll admit I've only seen a few episodes here and there so it's hard for me to get into it, but what does it have to do with British history?

Replace GOT with TWD and we can have a discussion.

quote:How is that an argument against vikings? I'm finding the first season of vikings considerably more entertaining than the first season of GOT.

quote:Are you joking??? GOT has the slowest developing plot lines of any tv show I have ever watched. There have been two different points for me where I had decided before watching an episode that if something major didn't happen, I was done with GOT, but both episodes ending up being just good enough.
There were several in between that were slow.
It really comes down to your preferences, but GOT's ratio of character development to plot development+action scenes is absurdly too high for my tastes. like in the second episode, they spent 10 minutes showing sansa talking to the other two women about how much geoffrey is an a-hole. Who the frick cares, I dont have time for this shite, i want to see something happening. GOT has to take every single little side plot and conversation in the books and give it screen time - which is great if you read the books, but it gets extremely tiresome if you're just a casual observer.

and how is it possible that a show with the budget Vikings does and on the channel vikings is has more entertaining action scenes than GOT??? I love medieval warfare, which is what originally turned me on to GOT, but the combat in GOT has been fricking terrible. They have been compensating for their complete neglect of quality fight scenes with titties and gore from day 1. It's really turned into a fantasy based soap opera for me, whereas vikings has been both more realistic (action) and more fast paced and entertaining
