You know whether you like them or hate them. With Tony you are conflicted, ultimately you know he is a terrible person for some of his actions but you root for him to succeed. You want him to kill people that threaten him. You root for him to evade the FBI/prison/death
With these criteria, Don Draper belongs in this discussion.
FWIW, I think George Constanza is the greatest TV character of all time.

The Sopranos literally gave us the golden era of TV.
Without the Sopranos, there would not be The Wire, BB, Mad Men, Justified, GoT, etc.
The show literally would have not had it's impact without Gandolfini's masterful performance.
We owe him an immeasurable debt.

I have never seen The Sopranos, mainly because I didn't have HBO back then. With all the praise I've heard and read today about Gandolfini, as well as the show's reputation, I am now going to watch it.
Plus, I've noticed that Marciano1 and I are usually in agreement about most things sports/movies. If it's his favorite TV character, there's a good chance I'll like it.

You are supposed to care because without his performance, The Sopranos would not have taken off.
Without the Sapranos and it's impact, the era that we live in where TV is amazing never would have happened.

I haven't seen The Sopranos in years so I'm not sure how it holds up compared to the amazing shows we enjoy now.
However, The Sopranos changed the entire landscape of TV. Before The Sopranos, TV was where talent went if it couldn't cut it for movies. TV was the minor leagues.
Since The Sopranos, everything changed.

It's one of those shows that will always be great. I LOVE that series. There were so many great season finale's and so many great individual episodes.
My advice would be to start watching it and avoid all threads on the show until you're finished.

most of the people responding will have a completely different answer 10 years from now.

as a "writer", like you have claimed to be in the past-who once said he independently arrived at the idea of Supernatural (a show not even in the same ballpark of The Sopranos), if you don't recognize th e greatness of the show/character...then you see the reason why you are a no talent message board posting hack, and David Chase is not.
