Runners -up: Walter Don Al Swearengen next on the list: Vic Mackey Raylan Tyrion Sam Malone Bundy Homer McNulty Ari (even though Entourage isn't in the same league).
That's a really good list.

The love and appreciation for Walter White is lost on me. I can't wait for that fricker to die. Him, his wife, his kid,...everyone but his brother-in-law.

Tony Soprano is #1 IMO....see my avatar.
TOP 5:
1. Tony Soprano (The Sopranos)
2. Ryan O'Reily (Oz)
3. Stringer Bell (The Wire)
4. Nate Fisher (Six Feet Under)
5. Walter White (Breaking Bad)

It doesn't matter that you love him or hate him, he obviously makes you feel something, which is what great characters and storytelling does.

2. Ryan O'Reily (Oz)
IMO (and this really is just my opinion), O'Reily isn't even the best character on that show. I definitely preferred Said or Beecher.
ETA: And Keller was so interesting on a sociopathic level

Saying Walter White is a better character than Tony Soprano is an insult to Tony Soprano and James Gandolfini.
frick y'all for even suggesting it

Only Omar and Walt are in the same league.

Does this mean JarJar was a great character bc he made everyone feel intense hatred?

He is without a doubt the best character in my opinion. The only other character that comes close is Omar, but Tony is the king.

The reason it is by far ahead of all other characters mentioned Tony/Gandolfini is in your feeling toward the character. With all of the other characters mentioned you have a clear feeling towards them. You know whether you like them or hate them. With Tony you are conflicted, ultimately you know he is a terrible person for some of his actions but you root for him to succeed. You want him to kill people that threaten him. You root for him to evade the FBI/prison/death.
Also if you ask someone who Walter White is who has never seen BB they won't know. If you ask someone who Tony Soprano is who has never seen the show will most likely know who he is, and likely be able to roughly describe the character.
RIP Jim, the world is at a loss

JR Ewing
Barney Fife
No doubt, Tony Soprano was up near the top.

Bryan Cranston(Walter White) is wayyyy better.
"I'm saddened by James Gandolfini's passing. He was a great talent & I owe him. Quite simply, without Tony Soprano there is no Walter White."
