in the golden age of TV, when TV acting is being taken really seriously, he is the best

Certainly the best actor to breath out of his nose.

To this day when I hear someone breath out of their nose o think him. But that's how good he was in that character. Every little mannerism was perfect.

I might rank Omar or Stringer above Tony but they weren't featured as much and had less to do.

What? No . Not for me at least.
I am biased though, thought the Sopranos was meh (even though the writing was excellent).
Homer Simpson, Archie Bunker, Ralph Kramden, Coach Taylor, Lucy, GOB, maybe Jack Bauer, maybe Captain Kirk or Spock,Fox Mulder, Elaine Benes....just throwing out some names, not claiming anyone is better than the other

James Gandolfini played the role of Tony Soprano to perfection, in such a way that I can't imagine anyone else playing that role. The way he commanded the role and gave it qualities and unique aspects, he was born to play the role of Tony Soprano.
Tony was a very attractive character for many reasons. First, his struggles as head of two families, his family at home and his mob family was very interesting, how they contrasted and how he could alternately be a loving family man and head of a mafia family. Tony could be vicious, but he could also be tender, and I think it was this contrast that made him appealing, the struggle between those two sides of himself. He grew up in a dysfunctional family, and that was probably played a large part of who he became.
Tony could be very funny and had very many memorable lines in the Sopranos. He embodied a lot of different emotions and you never knew what to expect from Tony Soprano, the character definitely had a lot of mystique to it and James Gandolfini nailed it.

Tony is the best. I don't think the Sopranos is #1 on the list, but they are only in the discussion because of Tony.
Runners -up:
Walter
Don
Al Swearengen
next on the list:
Vic Mackey
Raylan
Tyrion
Sam Malone
Bundy
Homer
McNulty
Ari (even though Entourage isn't in the same league).
