Sean Connery
The rest
I do agree with Gene Siskel who wrote:
"By now, after seven films, my opinion of Roger Moore as James Bond is pretty well fixed. His supercilious, smirking manner undermines any tension these thrillers attempt to achieve. How can you root for Bond when he`s always got a prissy grin on his face?"

1) Connery. Equal parts tough action star, suave ladies man, smart spy
2) Moore. Other side of the coin. Funny, suave, almost a parody but with good enough action chops to avoid lampooning it.
3) Brosnan. Looked the part, suave, good action chops. Always came off a bit too much "big action" and not as much spy. Not as good at humor.
4) Craig/Lazenby. Craig I only put above Dalton because of Casino Royale which was fantastic. After that, he just became a moody arse with almost zero charm or charisma.
5) Dalton. I like Timothy Dalton and think he could have been as good as Brosnan, but he took the role at the wrong time.

for me - it is Connery and Brosnan - 1 and 2.
the rest are interchangeable for me, with Lazenby last

Correct answer:
Connery is just so far ahead of everyone else. Moore was amazing when he played it serious.
Also, I want Brosnan to be higher but can’t put him there - the first two of his movies were excellent Bond movies, with the last two being a shitshow.
Dalton wasn’t awful - just different. Lazenby didn’t belong - makes you wonder how Connery or Moore would have done in that same juicy role. They are much better actors.

Tom Cruise is the best Bond........ American style.

Daniel Craig ruined the role.

Brosnan is my 1(a), 2 at the lowest.
He's hurt by Die Another Day, and The World Is Not Enough (although I like that one).
Imagine if he had Living Daylights and License to Kill on his resume' (which he would have if he would have been able to take the role in 86).
There would be zero controversy as to 1 and 2.

Dalton was probably the closest to the actual character Ian Fleming created in the books. But at that point Connery and Moore had taken it to a different level and audiences were not going to accept a reboot.

Sean Connery (set the tone)
Pierce Brosnan (quintessential 007. His contract with Remington Steele kept him from becoming the iconic Bond)
Daniel Craig (Action Bond. His meToo version of Bond diminished him)
Roger Moore (victim of lesser scripts)
Timothy Dalton
George Lazenby (getting married hurt him)
David Niven (parody Bond)

1. Daniel Craig (81.8%)

5. Pierce Brosnan (56.3%)
6. Roger Moore (54.7%)
1. James Bond
2. Moore/Brosnan
3. Dalton
4. Craig ( never cared for his Bond character lacking Joie de vivre, could've substituted Jason Bourne...only the franchise name made them "Bond films".
5. Lazenby (falls on the other spectrum, too much of a dandy.

No. In no universe is Craig the best Bond. He's too brooding.
1. Connery
2. Dalton
3. Brosnan
4. Lazenby/Craig
5. Moore

I'm an older dude, who grew up watching Bond movies with my dad as a kid in the 70's. There are (again, to me) 2 Bond prototypes:
1) Connery
2) the suave, almost smug British guy... this would be Moore, with Brosnan as his spiritual successor.
We really haven't gotten a successor to Connery.
As for the rest- Lazenby is a one-off. I liked the movie, wished it would have been Connery.
Craig and Dalton just lack the charisma the role demands. Their movies just feel "smaller"; I haven't seen all of Craig's and no desire to catch the ones I missed. The ones I saw were ok, but not "Bond, James Bond".

Craig was absolutely perfect in CR. But his acting got progressively worse in each subsequent film. Call it laziness or whatever. Some of his line delivery in the last two films was downright cringe. He clearly gave it his all for CR and showed up only for a paycheck after that.
