Definitely not, but I don't want to know the people who don't like Silver Linings Playbook.

Duvall movies like The Apostle and Tender Mercies could be universally appreciated as great work.

Whether or not they’re your flavor, it’s a tough sell that the script, score, cast, performances and sense of place weren’t all dead on.

2001. Not an art film, but an incredible piece of actual art.

Sort of. There is always room for debate. But not every debate will have as many good arguments.

The ability of a writer\director to anticipate the audience's emotional response is a part of what makes the experience more or less enjoyable (or even nonsensical).

So there is an effect of common understandings which are affected by culture. But there are common behaviors and emotional responses that cross cultural barriers - so it would not be accurate to throw up your hands and refuse to admit some audience reactions are more nearly universal than others.

There's no such thing.

I guess what you are looking for is a movie that there are far more people who like it vs. complain about it.

I guess if I had to take a poll, I'd bet my life on this movie:

Because you'd have to be a real a-hole not to like this movie.

By that I mean, it hits all the notes, it checks all the boxes. It's a great movie regardless of your personal tastes.

Technically, that's impossible, but since we pretty much have to agree as a species on anything "objective," that just leaves us with "objective = popular consensus." By that standard, most of the films being listed in this thread are pretty close to objectively great. The best way to approach it is to have someone who hates Lawrence/Godfather/Shawshank/whatever try to argue why it sucks without relying on "I just didn't enjoy it." Then we can work out the threshold for objective greatness.

I'm not a big fan. I like other Tarentino films more.

I love it and think it is brilliant but I know several people who hate it.
