Just noticed it on Netflix and realized it won best picture but I’d never heard of it. How does it hold up and will it entertain me? I see it’s got a 2 hour and 40 minute run time

Good movie. Very good performances. Oddly enough, the one misstep is the use of visual effects (in one scene) that have aged badly.

Great soundtrack.

I enjoyed it when I was in college and it came out; still enjoy it now.

A fine movie in the tradition of big screen 'landscape' epics like Lawrence of Arabia, Gandhi, and Dr. Zhivago.

I liked it quite a bit and I don't tend to care for old fashioned slow moving sweepy romances.

Fellow best picture nominees that year were The Color Purple, Kiss of the Spider Woman, Prizzi's Honor, and Witness. Of note, The Color Purple was nominated for 11 Oscars but won none making it the movie w/the most nominations w/o a win.

Been a very long time since I've seen it, but it was a wonderful movie.

Yeah the scene where Karen and Blixen are hunting birds, drinking champagne and scheming, before going to Africa is a head scratcher for an otherwise beautifully filmed movie.

Also an awesome score from John Barry. One of the best ever IMO.

The Color Purple was another Spielberg masterpiece. That it was shut out of the Oscars is criminal. Out of Africa was slow and boring IMO. Obviously the Academy disagreed.

One of my top ten. Saw it in the theater in high school, and still enjoy it now. I am female, though. My husband has seen it a couple of times, however, and appreciates the story. Beyond the love story, it is an interesting look at British colonialism in Africa. It is lovely to watch, and the score, as others have said, is fabulous.

Good question. I was in Kenya last summer and toured the Blixen house where they supposedly actually filmed a lot of scenes. My family is eager to see if we can spot specific pieces of furniture and the like that we saw in there - like a night stand for which the "stand" was really an elephant leg!

It's a favorite of mine. The story between Streep and Redford was one of those big epic romances you just don't get anymore in film.

Alright so I could care less about some African Romance, how much native war fighting is there or big game hunting?

Not much actual fighting or hunting, but there's plenty of testosterone to go around. Streep is a woman in a man's world, back when it was REALLY a man's world.

Some, but probably not enough to entertain you if you're looking for that as the sole source of your entertainment.

Just learned Lawrence of Arabia is on HBO Max so I’ll definitely be checking it out.

are you female? If yes, then yes. If you're a guy, are you trying to bed a female? if so, then yes. If you're male and just looking for something to watch, its a long movie. Not enough action to make up for all the female-appealing drama.

Imagine thinking you have to be female in order to enjoy an epic that isn't action-centered.
