Goodfellas is not AS good as The Godfather because it's a whole different take on the mob.

I think it is "on par" and far, far more rewatchable.
Godfather I and II are excellent films - 2 of the best, but are ponderous compared to the street level, booze and cocaine fueled ride that is Goodfellas.

I prefer the Godfather movies over Goodfellas, but one can certainly make an argument the way though. All of them are perfect movies.

Nope, nope, nope. "Goodfellas" was entertaining, certainly, but first two Godfathers are absolute works of art in every aspect, from cinematography to acting to plotting to scoring. It's simply not fair to "Goodfellas" to force a comparison between the two. Take "Goodfellas" for what it's worth and you'll enjoy it more.

Insurmountably better.
Goodfellas is one of my Top 5 favorite movies. It's genius.
I've never been able to stay awake throughout The Godfather. It's celluloid Ambien. Don't even get me started on Brando's overacting and weird speech impediment - it's so bizarre I laughed the first time he was on screen.

goodfellas is awesome. the best mob movie that's not the godfather 1 or 2
but it's a lot more style than substance. no character arc, voice over narration (which I like in this movie but it's easier than what godfather does), and more of a lifestyle movie than a story.
none of that is to say goodfellas sucks or that those aspects of the movie suck, but you're comparing it to the godfather

As a previous poster stated its a different movie made at a different time... it was pretty damn shocking for the early 70's.
Goodfellas is great because it was well done movie with a pretty raw take on the inside of the mob and being based on a true story. I could see how if you watched Goodfellas before watching The Godfather movies you would be bored as they did not have the edginess of a Goodfellas.

it's a freaking great movie. it will be remembered forever. iconic lines of dialogue and images...but godfather feels like classic cinema from the time that which it portrays kind of like the empire strikes back has a lot of Humphrey bogart like dialogue and swagger

It's worse that both Godfather movies, but those are probably the greatest mob movies of all-time.

I like how everyone prefers to watch Goodfellas but thinks Godfather is so much better. A movie is made for watching. That’s the only thing you can do with it. So rewatchability is not a minor concern.

Exactly. If the Godfather is on, I stop and watch it. Goodfellas never grabbed me. Good movie. Just not one of those I will watch over and over.
