Trying to remember the book. But a former FBI UC was talking about them and said they were probably the scariest guys in the mob at the time, especially DeSimone who was like mob royalty. The movie treats Tommy as some sort of quasi momma's boy when the truth was that he was mob royalty....I think his uncle was one of the big guys involved with the Los Angeles Mob.
Out of all of the people in the film, the Tommy character was as close to accurate the UC said, There was literally no empathy in him. He even went so far as to call him a real psychopath and that the mob was relieved when they had him killed....and the FBI did not shed a tear either and that the FBI knew which persons whacked him and they did not pursue.

With the caveat that, because Pesci was cast in the role, they had to make him a little guy with Napoleon syndrome - DeSimone was a big guy in real life. And, keep in mind, for dramatic purposes/economy/etc., to tell all the stories from when Henry was a middle school gangster all the way to witness protection program, they had to use composite characters - notably the Tommy D character (based heavily on Thomas DeSimone) which is a composite of DeSimone and Paul Vario, Jr. (Paulie's son from the film).

Yeah, DeSimone's father was a loser, but both his grandfather and uncle were bosses in Los Angeles. He had 2 brothers who were Gambino associates. I think DeSimone was cultivated to be a go between from the Luccheses and Gambinos, and ironically, he got killed because of an old neighborhood beef with a Gambino soldier (depicted in the film as the murder of Frank Vincent's character Billy Batts).

Can someone explain this....
If one’s premise is that goodfellas is more entertaining or “rewatchable” than The Godfather, but The Godfather is a better movie, how is that possible? Isn’t the whole point of watching a movie for entertainment? Thus if one movie is more entertaining than the other, shouldn’t it also be better (in that person’s opinion)?
