Oh, you mean the guy who has been a bad arse in every Marvel movie so far?
They made him a complete bitch in this movie that lost his eye to a cat.
He owes his entire career to Captain Marvel now after everything you have already seen.
They actually weakened his character.

Yeah he didn't know about aliens until Carol was chased to Earth and he joined her. Did you expect them to just say oh he already knew about everything? Would you be bitching if it were another hero?

I actually liked the fact that all this super power stuff was new to him. If you think that is my complaint with the movie you aren't paying attention to the conversation.
My point is that when a dog is going to have some bite you will see it when he's a pup.
Nick fury has a lot of bite in every movie, but none in this one. His character was different on a foundational level.

Do you think it makes more sense to replace the other characters with men? I find that a strange criticism as I think changing them to men would be weird.

No, this movie just feels unnecessary and removed from what marvel already had going.
Forget all politics involved I would prefer Captain Marvel not exist. I would rather go straight from Infinity to End Game.
I will be severely disappointed if they waited this late in the game to bring in a character that is a trump card to Thanos.
It would basically make all the previous characters and their deeds irrelevant in the grand scheme of things.
I'm not a comic book movie fan, but I keep up. I liked Infinity and am looking forward to End Game, but Captain Marvel sandwiched in between has me worried they may play some easy out shenanigans based on her character.
For now I have faith they are smarter than that based on what they've done so far, but it does give me some concern.

I actually enjoyed the movie but of course there was all sorts of girl power shite.
Why the frick would there be a program to let poverty GIRLS (not KIDS, just GIRLS) see the movie for FREE if there wasn't girl power shite all through it?

By definition no.
Mary Sue isn't just a powerful character with no flaws, or a single flaw designed to keep them kinda human.
They are author inserts of themselves into perfect characters. Wish fulfillment really.
Wes Crusher is seen as one because some people saw him as Roddenberry thinking of himself as the kid that saves the day all the time.

Yeah. People just grab on to these terms and apply them to any character or story line they don't like.
With Captain Marvel, so many people have had a part as "authors" or writers of her over the years from comic books to now the movies, that if she were a true Mary Sue she'd be pretty schizophrenic. Plus, she suffered a ton of stuff in the comics and was far from perfect. She was a alcoholic, she lost her powers to Rogue, she was mind controlled and pretty much raped by a character for years, etc. etc.
So far, with the screen version, we've only seen her in one movie and a few previews/trailers from another. It's kind of early to say what will happen with her and if she will suffer any of the stuff that she did in the comics.

A Mary Sue can also be a character that seems inserted into the story that has traits of the author. For instance, many see Samwell Tarly in ASOIAF as a Mary Sue for George R.R. Martin. Pudgy, bookish kid who seems useless at first and will likely save the day or have a major role in doing so. Difference is the character is written well and isn’t just good at everything right off the bat.

But when these women first graced the screen no one gave a shite that they were women because they have deep character development and worlds built around them and they are iconic in some of the all time greatest action and adventure movies:
Sara Conner
Ellen Ripley
Princess Leia
Trinity
Leeloo
Uma in Kill Bill
Furiosa
It's very possible to write a bad arse female lead in an action movie and it's infuriating when someone acts like women have never been represented in action roles.
Terminator and Aliens are two of the most iconic action movies of all time both centered around female leads.

With the exception of Leia and Leeloo, these are very single-minded focus, badass characters, but most aren't very complex.
Not defending CM, but I will point out that most of what you guys are arguing for in well-written female characters are just bad-asses in action movies you otherwise liked. I think Carol Danvers is given more characterization than Uma in the first Kill Bill, though it's nowhere near as good a movie.
