Action movie legend Bruce Willis has just become the first Hollywood actor to sell his rights to the possibility of a "digital twin" to the US firm Deepcake,

quote:

Now, the actor has officially sold the rights to his likeness to be essentially "hired" by Deepcake for future productions.

With the use of deepfake technology, Willis was able to make a cameo in a Russian commercial only last year without ever stepping foot on a set.

Isn’t he basically accepting every project that is offered to him because he is slowly turning into an invalid?

If they make a deepfake of a celebrity, then a studio makes an entire movie with teh fake/AI/Deepfake person and it goes on to be a hit, does the real human person get anything from it? Or just whatever they were paid for use of the likeness on the front end?

I'm sure all that would be worked out well in advance during the contract/plannign stages but I'm curious.

I unfortunately think this is sad news because I really think Bruce needs the money and he obviously can’t act in his condition.

EDIT: For those of you who don’t know, Bruce Willis has aphasia

Bruce has no idea where he is anymore, but it's probably a good way to make money at this stage in his life.

This is going to be so weird. Famous celebrities will never go away. Their estates will license their likeness and voices into perpetuity. We will see Brad Pitt in new movies FOREVER.

Hardly. What's going to happen is the studios are going to be in an arms race to create virtual celebrities where the only people they have to pay are people entering prompts telling the virtual actors what to do. And eventually those guys will be replaced by AI too.

I really, really welcome this. Actors are the highest paid and the worst of Hollywood. It would be grand to dump the excessive millions they get paid into the advancement of cinema as a whole. Hopefully better paid writers and editors, directors will become the true big earners.

It will be like Weird Science and they can create the perfect actors. Actors specific to just a movie as well. Make the story carry the film, not who is in it.

Or they can pay a lump sum to the estates of dead Hollywood stars for rights to deepfake them in perpetuity.

On the bright side, we may finally get that sequel to Casablanca with the original cast we've been waiting for.
