After I saw Endgame in theaters I posted and said that I thought IW was a better movie, but that I wanted to see EG a few more times before makings a decision. After several viewings, I'm even more convinced.

The primary reason is because I thought several things in EG were "silly." Don't get me wrong, I love the humor in these movies and it's typically very clever. But these things took away from the story, I think:

Fat Thor: I hate it. Thor is an ultimate badass and EG makes a mockery of the character. Thor (a god) would simply not stop giving a F$%# and veg on the couch. I can't think of anything more out of character for him. To me Feige would have recognized that this idea didn't work and scrapped it, but he obviously didn't. Then, in the final scene, he just goes ahead and becomes completely normal Thor again.

Professor Hulk: My primary issue with this is where we find Banner in his first EG scene. He's having the time of his life taking selfies and being a celebrity while everyone else in the world appears to be in mourning. Again, this is completely out of character for Banner who is typically the smartest and most grounded person in the room.

The whole middle of the movie: I relate with several reviews which said you'd be alright if you watched the first hour of the movie, took an hour break, then came back for the last hour. Obviously that's an exaggeration, and there was a ton of great stuff in there (like Tony's scene with his Dad), but I think the time traveling portion of the movie was sub-par relatively speaking.

All just my opinion, of course. Still a great movie overall, especially the last hour. Thanos was a fantastic character.

I think it is safe to assume that a lot of people would have been able to smile and be happy after 5 years.

More than this, I just wish we’d have gotten a proper Hulk vs Thanos rematch. It’s obvious the Russo’s hate Hulk. All he does in that last fight is powerbomb some random troll thing in the background.

I actually disagree that he was the same in the end. The Thor bantering with Starlord was, finally, a Thor without Burdens. Watch him in Avengers, Dark World and Age of Ultron again. He's one of the more serious people in those films.

It was a big change, and showed that he knew his people were in good, maybe better, hands and that he had a new job to take on.

Wouldn't you put on a smiling face for kids? He's also doing much better because he was the most tortured Avenger, and he finally figured that part out. He changed too.

Time travel, even when done by using the alternate universes so that it is not really time travel, is hard to pull off. I don't think they should of used it at all.

For using this method to rectify the snap alone makes IW a better movie.

I think that's just because they skipped 5 years forwards. 5 years in, I don't think it was unusual to be happy with kids.

I liked Infinity War more, but I thought Endgame was actually pretty solid in showing how people react differently to tragedy. A diversity of reactions and some people being in better places than others is actually very realistic.

The third act of EG was nowhere near as good as IW’s, for a multitude of reasons

Also, I know it’s a comic book movie but the movie breaks it’s own logic in a big way on a few occasions. That Stark-tech can handle the stones is the biggest.

I also thought most of the time travel stuff didn’t quite live up to what it could have been.

the problem with this view is that you are thinking it is only the ending of IW that made him the way he is in EG.

go back and look at everything that happened leading up to EG - he loses his dad, he loses his home, he finds out he has a sister, that he had no idea of previously, and she kills all his friends as well as most of Asgard, not to mention she breaks his hammer and fricks his eye up. then he sees what is left of the refugees reduced by 1/2 by Thanos, his brother dieing, Hiemdal dieing - and then 1/2 the universe being wiped out because you didn't kill Thanos.

that is a Lot to be heaped on 1 guy and not expect it to affect him one way or another.

Endgame was a fine movie, but I agree with you that Infinity War was better.

Endgame was a good movie. It had big shoes to fill after Infinity War, though. But, I agree, my biggest gripe with EG was how they continued the ruination of Thor. The time travel stuff didn't bother me that much. Just went with it; logical shortcomings and all. The payoff of Cap weilding Mjolnir covers over a lot of ills.

Thor was clearly sad and fat because he knew he couldn't hold Captain Marvel's thong.

I agree with you, IW >>> Endgame. I’ve watched Endgame 3 times now. Once in the theater and twice at home. Didn’t finish it the 3rd time, cut it off somewhere in the middle. Watched IW 10-12 times and always watched til the end.

Not sure what it is exactly but the pacing or transitions or something in certain parts of Endgame bother me. The more I watch it the worse it gets. Anybody else pick up on this?

Thor’s arc didn’t bother me but he didn’t need to be a fat blob. It was cheap physical comedy that, to me, fell very flat. Hell, he could have said the exact same lines, been a drunken disheveled mess, and the point would have been made. I feel it was done simply for the payoff of him wearing that sweater so Stark calling him Lebowski as if that is some big payoff. Ooooohhhhh, he went from calling him Point Break to Big Lebowski.

Professor Hulk: He can be happy and cheerful, I had no problem with that. I did have a problem will how he acted through most of the movie. The only time Banner acted like Banner was when he was talking with the Sorcerer Supreme. What was with all the foolishness and clowning around??? Was once on Stark’s level mentally but now Prof Hulk is on comedic relief duty.

Still, a fine movie on its own but had really big shoes to fill. Didn't quite match IW's quality and smoothness.

Which is better doesn't really matter to me. I see them as a package deal to end the franchise. It's like the last few episodes of Breaking Bad. Ozymandias was the best part of the ending but it doesn't tarnish the last two episodes because they did what they needed to do. That's how I view these two final movies.

I understand why people hate it but I also say this whenever it’s brought up. Thor, powered up, in his prime, with Stormbreaker, handed Thanos his arse. If Thor stayed the same then the combined might of Cap, Iron Man and Thor would have taken Thanos out. No epic fight scene, no last half hour.

Thor needed to be nerf in order for there to be legit stakes in the movie. Why do you think Infinity War spent the entirety of the movie keeping Thor and Thanos apart? Because with Stormbreaker, Thor is actually probably a little bit above Captain Marvel. I know that’s not how it is in the comics but in the movies, he was probably Odin level with Stormbreaker. He needed to be fat and out of shape.

Russos got a lot right but man did they ever frick over Hulk.

In IW Banner was mostly a goofy buffoon and even though they let him perform the reverse snap, he was largely kind of wasted.

I hated the Thor arc but since he’s not done with the MCU yet there’s time to redeem that.

Yes IW is a better movie but EG was still a good movie and great send off for a decade’s worth of movies
