My dad took me to see Jaws... I was just a kid and somehow I knew something was going to pop out of the hole.. My dad jumped out of his seat and I had a good laugh.. I will never forget that..

The Bilbo one got everybody, I remember a little girl in the theater near me busting out crying and her parents trying to console her.

The best jump scares are when they are out of no where but still appropriate to the story.

Most horror movies are sadly too predictable as to when they are coming, and using them too much in general.

There was a pitch meeting about this movie and he described it as she looks like she just received the most thoughtful gift and I can’t unsee it now.

Haunting of Hill House car ride scene. Nothing has ever gotten me like that and I’ve seen quite a few jump scares

this scene in Haunting of Hill House scared the frick out of me.
That was so damn effective because by episode 8 you realized it was atmospheric horror and NOT a jump scare kind of show.

Then BAM! out of nowhere.

I jumped and then laughed my arse off because that was so damned blatant I could almost see the chick playing the ghost smirking mid-shriek.

My first thought was Jaws but when Roy Scheider is throwing the chum out and that big bastard pops out of the water right in his face. I would've been dead on the spot

the ending of the first Friday 13th movie

Yep. Decayed, boy Jason jumping out of the water and turning over the canoe is the first and biggest jump scare I can remember.

I watched that movie on cable with my mom.

Exorcist III

If you've seen it, you know the scene I'm referring to.

I would like to give an honorable mention to an unlikely one that got me as a kid - the damn Mynock on the window of the Millennium Falcon

When the alien appeared at the kids birthday party in Signs

I’m a pussy with scary movies, Signs had several, including the bday scene and the kitchen pantry scene these got me good at 11 years old with a cornfield behind my house. It was in full view from the couch, I was fricked at night for weeks if I stayed up late and was looking at the corn field
