In December 1975, Sir Alec Guinness wrote to a friend about a role he'd been offered

The rest, as they say, is history:

If I were reading a script of Star Wars for the first time I could see how it could be thought of as fairy-tale rubbish. But good ole “Paul” and even Sir Alec himself are what turned it into a treasure.

They really couldn't afford him, but George wanted at least 1 big name. He ultimately ponied up part of his (meaning Lucas') points to offer.

Sir Alec was intrigued enough with Lucas and the other folks involved(he never really warmed up to the material), that he took it on the gamble it might turn into something big.

Alec Guinness was right about calling Star Wars “fairy-tale rubbish” and that was in 1975.

Take away the costumes and ground-breaking special effects and it’s a rehash of the pulp stories of the early 20th century.

Alex made more money doing the Star Wars movie than he did the rest of his career combined.

This he saw as a joke.

Star Wars notes:

Luke was a woman in the first script, this is only changed later and after the first few meetings.

There was a person in Baton Rouge with one of the copies of the first script, which he showed a number of us back in 1977-78 range.

The Star Wars movie is based on the Japanese movie The Hidden Fortress.

The part of Luke in that movie is the poor woman who is the princess servant they pick up along the way.

There was so much wrong with the original script. Glad people talked George into sense. Imagine if people were able to fix the scripts for the prequels for him like they did 4 and 5.

Bridge on the River Kwai was a movie which I saw when I was very young. Came out before my time, but still, when I saw Sir Alec Guiness was in Star Wars, I thought that was pretty cool.

And it was!

George Lucas' wife cleaned up a LOT of the weaknesses and problems w/ the Star Wars saga when they were married.

Fairy tale rubbish that could be interesting sums it up perfectly.

Relatively unheralded by most "normie" Star Wars fans, but folks who worked behind the scenes give her major credit for editing Star Wars and Empire into the legendary films they became. Marcia was a highly regarded editor outside of her work with George (she edited Taxi Driver, for example), but her career essentially ended with their divorce. She did walk away with $50m (back when that was real money in the mid-80s), but still.

She hates the sequels like the rest of us.

I was more interested in the quote and glanced at the “old guy, white beard” and at the end, I was like, “Uhh, what the frick?” And then I looked at the dude again.

Lost Horizon 1937
King Kong 1933
The Adventures of Robin Hood 1938
Captain Blood 1935
The Thief of Bagdad 1940
Blood and Sand 1941
Red River 1949
Captain from Castile 1947
The Black Rose 1950

What he brings to the movie is a huge part of why I think it's the best of the three.

Star Wars New Hope could drop today and I’d still love it.

Harrison Ford had such a touch of gold back then… Star Wars trilogy, Raiders and Blade Runner.

Maybe it’s because of my then kid memory/perception but so many of the actors of that time seemed to perfect for their roles, like many in The Godfather.
