Except, they DID care. So much so that statues, busts, coins and frescos were made to her likeness. Even to the point of showing her with red hair. Which would be weird if no one cared what she looked like.

We went from:
“There is no such thing as woke casting. Why do you care?”
To:
“She’s a fictional character, so race doesn’t matter! Why do you care?”
And now we have:
“She’s a historical character but we aren’t 100% sure of every one of her ancestors! Why do you care?”
and
“She’s a historical character but race wasn’t important to her identity! Why do you care?”
I guess next it’ll simply be:
“frick you, white boy.”
Which would be the most honest justification.

quote:Yes, they do. She's depicted more than once in art and coinage made during her lifetime.
Cleopatra was provably light skinned, practically white,
No one knows
quote:There was no 'black v white' debate. That's for sure, because it wasn't necessary. Artists depicted her as what she looked like. Had they not, they'd likely not have enjoyed the consequences.

Why does that make you mad?

And the reason it’s okay for black people to play roles traditionally played by whites and not okay for white people to play other races is because 99% of every role for a hundred years was written for white people.
At least you admit that woke casting is simply retaliation. I respect your honesty.

I don't like casting games from my phone. Can't play on twitter and cast at the same time. Vizio doesn't let you have ESPN app on there. I have to use my Fire Stick to watch without casting.
I know this is not the casting she's talking about, but I thought this thread needed some levity.

No she wasn’t

Sort of a weird argument when:
A) Ancient Rome is pretty central to the history of western civilization (and western civilization is supposedly uniquely racist). Making the claim would seem to argue a central western culture was inexplicably without tribalism at the same time they conquered swathes of Europe, the Middle East, and Northern Africa.
B) It seems like a pretty obvious every society including the Greek, Roman, Egyptian, and Persian civilizations took a lot of pride in their unique accomplishments and places in human history. Cleopatra was viewed with suspicion by average Romans and Caesar's relationship with her was probably a negative overall.

To some degree maybe how the British viewed Meghan Markle. Not a identical comparison, but I get the feeling most weren’t thrilled with the idea.

Cleopatra was Macedonian Greek like the other members of the Ptolemaic dynasty (not Egyptian)
It always bothers me when people say this. She was Ethnically Greek but her family had been in Africa for THREE HUNDRED YEARS when she was born. I think that would qualify her to say she was African

Hell, they made Anne Boleyn black.
Yep, and apparently most Brits didn't appreciate it, because it tanked in the ratings and was eviscerated by critics. What was worse than race swapping Anne was the writers adding a subplot that one of the reasons she was condemned was because people hated her for being black. It's impossible to be color blind watching these shows when they make the character's blackness a plot point.
Netflix's Bridgerton series is the exact opposite. It takes place in an alternate Regency-era Britain where blacks and other ethnic groups are members of the upper class, and even part of the royal family, but they don't make a big deal about the characters' races, if it's even mentioned at all.

You got me. I forgot every Roman emperor had a golden complexion and Lincoln was copper-hued.

We have no surviving paintings or other artistic renderings of Cleopatra that were made during her lifetime, fukwit.

We know she was Greek but since we have no contemporary artistic renderings let’s pretend she was black.
At least that other poster was honest enough to say this is retaliation against whites.

About 10 or 12 years ago, there was a live broadcast of The Sound of Music. Carrie Underwood played the role of Maria von Trapp. One night only and it aired around Christmas. My then girlfriend wanted to watch it, and I like Carrie Underwood's legs, so we did.
The story is set in 1938 Austria, for those who may not know. I'm pretty sure there weren't many black folks waiting around for the Anschluss, if there were even any in the first place. The Mother Superior character was portrayed by a very accomplished Broadway actress, who also happened to be black. Great voice, great talent; but I was laughing my arse off at the prospect of a black Mother Superior in 1938 Austria. WTF!?!
I understand that TV and movies sometimes require the suspension of disbelief, but this was too much for me to handle.

That'd be like casting a Korean woman as Harriet Tubman.
I would pay money to see that.

You laugh at the coinage...did an artist not make the image on the coin?
They were minted in her lifetime.

I’m confused as to why people care. She was at least half African. It’s not some huge stretch to have her played by a black person.
This is an incredibly stupid statement. I'm assuming you'll be all in on the new Obama movie starring John Malkovich. I mean, he is part white anwyays.
