Titanic is listed at #33 on IMBDs list of the most iconic movies of all time. I'm not sure why anyone would argue otherwise. There are scenes from that movie that are still recognizable by anyone, i.e. "I'm the king of the world" and Rose kicking Jack off the door.

Tocuhe, but it also had an historical connection to people. It was done really well. I think one of the most iconic and symbolic scenes from the movie was when the band was playing "Nearer my God to Thee.",as the Ship was sinking. It pretty much sums up the tragedy.

Doing my list of the movies I saw in the theater made me realize how many good movies I could have seen in the theater, but didn't. That list is pretty impressive!

Starting with the 70's because that's when I was able to choose which movie I wanted to see. A lot of these weren't shown in the small town where I lived. Would have been an hour drive to see them.

*The Godfather-Not Shown in Local Theater
*The Godfather part 2-Not Shown in Local Theater
*Apocalypse Now-Not Shown in Local Theater
*Taxi Driver-Not Shown in Local Theater
*The Deer Hunter-Even with a friend's dad telling me it was a must see film, I had no interest in a four hour movie at 18 years old
*Network
*M*A*S*H
*Aguirre, the Wrath of God-Not Shown in Local Theater
*Last Tango in Paris-Not Shown in Local Theater
*Monty Python and the Holy Grail
*Barry Lyndon
*Five Easy Pieces
*The Conversation
*The Last Picture Show
*McCabe and Mrs. Miller
*Badlands
*The Last Detail
*The Man Who Would Be King
*Breaking Away
*Straw Dogs
*Mad Max-No one that I know, saw this before The Road Warrior

Again, this isn't a list of movies I just wish I'd seen. I could have driven an hour to see any of them, and just didn't.

I remember seeing The Matrix on the opening Friday with my fellow Sci-Fi loving engineer friends at the old shitty movie theater in Auburn. Before the days of the internet I had zero clue what the movie was about just knew it was Sci Fi so I had to see it. Probably the most blown away I've ever been after a movie.

Saw Forrest Gump on opening weekend. Another movie I had no clue what it was about walking into the theater.
I actually didn't want to see it but the three friends I was with outvoted me. That was the summer after I graduated High School and the last movie I saw with my 3 best friends from High School before we all parted way.

Those are probably the two movies I remember most vividly having thought I just saw something special as I left the theater.

I saw Lord of the Rings FotR at the opening Midnight showing in Auburn. The theater was probably half full.

When the 2nd movie came out it was standing room only for the midnight showing.

When the 3rd and final movie came out it was standing room only in 3 separate theaters.

Like others on here nay big movie that came out in the late 70's Star Wars etc over the next 25 years I have seen in the theater. Then I got married and have kids so left to see things they can watch now.

I will say Scarface was pretty good in the theaters.

Great ones for me were movies like The Breakfast Club(any of the HS classics), Ferris Bueller, Fast Times, Ghost Busters, Top Gun, Terminator, Blade Runner, Platoon, Full Metal Jacket, First Blood, Aliens,Superman, Jaws, Rocky, as well as all the Star Wars and Indiana Jones movies.

My mom was not happy when she had found out my friends brother had been taking us to movies like Animal House, Mad Max, and Apocalypse Now.

quote:

That is just the films from 1964, Baton Rouge only had 2 TV stations then and most went to the movies on weekends. Most of these we saw at the drive in, but My Fair Lady, Goldfinger, etc. were at a theater.

Sounds like my experience. Born in 52 and was working jobs by the time I was 12 to make some spending money. One of my favorite things to do, especially in the summer months was to head to Canal St. and hit either the Saenger, Lowes State or go a bit farther toward the river and see movies at the RKO Orpheum. All these theaters were air conditioned and it was a great way to cool off and spend a weekday afternoon.

Admission was no more than $1.50 and concessions didn't require you to take out a second mortgage to buy popcorn, a soda and some bars of candy.

The Empire Strikes Back (I was 5). The original Karate Kid, Ghostbusters, and Gremlins. Forrest Gump, Braveheart.
The Phantom Menace was iconic in terms of extreme excitement followed by deep, gut wrenching disappointment.
