Yeah, I'm not that old. Jaws when I was 4 (dad is a fun guy) is the earliest I can do.

But I remember seeing Close Encounters with my then toddler brother. During the scene with the mashed potatoes, he yelled out "HE LIKES EM!" Everyone laughed.

The most build up I can ever remember a movie having was Star Wars The Phantom Menace. I was 13 when it came out, and I dont remember a movie since then that had that much excitement leading up to it.

I had never seen the originals at the time and I was just ready for The Iron Giant and Toy Story 2.

Does it count for 75th anniversary?

I saw Gone with the Wind on the big screen for the 75th anniversary. Even had the intermission in it. That was pretty awesome imo seeing that on the big screen.

I think you are misusing the word "iconic." my list is:

Star Wars as little kid;
E.T.;
Batman;
Platoon;
Good Fellas;
Lord Of The Rings Trilogy; and
Sin City.

Failing to meet "iconic" label are Titanic, Star Wars Revenge Of Sith, Grease.

Toy Story was incredible on the big screen when I was 7. Parents didn't take me to Jurassic Park, thinking it would scare the shite out of me (correctly).

Here are a few that aren't iconic but that gained substantially more appeal after their initial theater run:

Children of Men
Scott Pilgrim vs the World
No Country for Old Men

And then some cultural phenomenons:

300
Hostel
Inception
The Dark Knight
The Departed

He does a good podcast with Rogan. Super down to earth and offers interesting insight about Hollywood and being a child actor
