Literally everyone thought he was gonna marry Laena, including Otto and Alicent.

I thought I remember Otto having a smirk on his face after the announcement like he knew it was coming. Also, as others have said, Alicent was there, so it had to have been known by at least the Hightowers.

So, the story originally had Hightower simply going to Dragonstone and getting the egg back, but it looks like HBO pulled a Rey Palpatine and went full Mary Sue.

The wheels are falling off. The ghouls are revealing themselves.

Jesus Christ- I will never understand people's desire to hate watch something. Why waste your limited time on this earth being miserable?

Actually incorrect hence why Alicent was invited into the small council. Surprised no one on the council her being there. That had to be the biggest giveaway the moment the camera showed her.

As an audience you had to know he was going to marry the wrong girl. It creates controversy which helps move the plot forward. Would be very boring if all the main characters made the correct and safe choices.

Yeah, but what about Winter is Coming? And the Wall that had been there for, what, thousands of years? If the dream winter coming from the North was a secret it wasn't a very well kept secret. Seems all of Westeros knew about, at least as some sort of fairy tale.

Lets not forget Jon Snow found the cave drawings under Dragonstone of the Children of the Forest standing with the First Men fighting against the White Walkers. Even though later we found out they actually made the white walkers.

Maybe the secret was the motivation for the magical tragedy at Summerhall

I figure it's Otto Hightower. He's poisoned the throne to slowly kill the king.

The superstition behind the Iron Throne is that it will reject a king not fit to rule, so I think his injuries from it and his body's inability to heal from them are to help point out that he is a weak king. I don't think Otto wants the king to die, I think he has the king right where he wants him and he's using his position as Hand to manipulate the king to get his way. If the king dies, it's either going to be Rhaenyra or Daemon taking over, and Daemon hates Otto. Rhaenyra doesn't seem to like the decisions he's been making as her father's Hand and certainly would not be as easily controlled as her father. So he stands nothing to gain from that I don't think.

Damn i didn't even notice it wasn't her lol i just thought her nose and face looked a little different. They don't look that much different in age that you would need 2 different actors.

This is all the more reason why Rhaenyra should have immediately thought it odd that Alicent was present. They don't even make the half hearted attempt to show Rhaenyra making quizzical eyes and looking around

Ok? Even if she did pipe in and say Alicient why are you here? Viserys would respond that they're getting married and the same sequence of events follows. I don't know what you're trying to get at

That superstition is also dumb. Think about it. The king would get instant feedback if he knew every bad decision the throne cuts him. Banish your brother, throne cuts you. On second thought, you're not only not banished you're my new Hand.

I know the lore and legends sound really cool, and they are, but they are not practical.

Now this I can buy, One of the main reasons I would like a Dunk and Egg spin off is so it could end at Summerhall and we would also get a fleshed out Jenny of Oldtsones who also has much promise for such an interesting character.

Except it's a show based on a fantasy novel, in which the author expressly writes that this happens.

Jaime reflects on the fact that Aerys the Mad King was always covered in scabs and half-healed cuts. Joffery once was described as getting aggravated at someone and calling for the person to be killed, and cutting himself on the throne while that happens. And those two are both pretty good examples of really bad kings who aren't going to put any stock whatsoever in superstition or let whether or not they got cut by a sword chair dictate what they were or weren't going to do with their kingdom.

ETA: To be clear, I'm not saying I think the Throne is some anthropomorphic thing that intentionally bites the bad guys. I'm saying that Martin has used this as a literary device and has made it clear the people of the realm hold this superstition.

Two things I noticed watching again

1. The king wanted to go to dragon stone himself but Otto stopped him.

2. Otto had his men stand down and were about to go back to KL empty handed.

Also, Daemon isn’t witty enough to win conversations. He’s really dumb.

That's not fan fiction. That lore from the author It's a fantasy series that is showing in a small way that that actually proves true. The last cut on his finger was small enough for him not to give any thought to it at first or cause him to think back and realize there was a reason he was cut. And again, it's a fantasy series, these are the kind of things that are in most fantasy series.

Oh, I know all this. But you have to admit we've gotten pretty detailed on this thread complaining about who should and shouldn't be in a room for a scene or a myriad of other things. Why not pick apart something that obvious?

For sure. Whether or not Alicent being in the room debate needs to end

I'll try to change the subject again... Crabs are coming, and I'm ready for it. That dude had a pretty badass look to him.

Hmmm, cool little tidbit this middling show watcher was not aware of.
