I think it was a very good first episode. They have the impossible task of being attached to GoT, no matter how you feel about it.
You have to give this team a chance. They had nothing to do with season 8 of GoT.

Honestly my only gripe was the black Targaryen. Black people in the books come from the summer isles so it would have made more sense to just have him be normal and married to a targ although they liked to keep things pure so that would have been a stretch in itself.

This is a pointless gripe.

Sounds like more torture porn that george is really fond of.

He may very well be but casting a black man to be a Targaryen makes zero sense and feels like a forced woke agenda

It really did have the feel of the first few seasons. At first the wife was still jaded going in, but as soon as it ended she asked of we have to wait a week for the next one.

It is a fantasy TV show. Why are you looking for something to be offended by? I don't understand this mindset where people can't let themselves enjoy anything.

The only black guy is the only thing you don’t like. It’s not that big of a deal, man.

I’ll ask again,
Is he not a Velaryon married to a Targ?

I don’t think the black guy is a Targaryen.
Isn’t he the Admiral/ Lord of the Tides/ Sea Snake?
If so, he’s a Velaryion.

Very meh start. You’d think they’d at least kick it off with something interesting instead of “rich girls are oppressed but not really and child birth is murder” but I guess not.
As has been mentioned about a gazillion times, GRRM took heavy influence from actual history like the War of the Roses, the reign of the Tudors, etc.
Succession is the most important part of sustaining a dynasty. And yes, men were preferred for a very long time until succession laws were changed so it mirrors that.
The succession in the wake of the death of Edward (Henry VIII’s son) is a perfect example of how messy that shite can get.
ETA: And yes, child birth was often death for the mother before modern medicine.

Pretty sure it always had the crown because the Baratheons are descended from House Durrandon who originally had a variation of the sigil:
quote:
During the Conquest, Orys Baratheon, one of Aegon Targaryen's fiercest generals, and rumored to be his bastard brother, slew Argilac the Arrogant, last of the Storm Kings, and married his daughter, Argella.[1] Orys adopted the sigil and words of his wife's ancestral line, so creating House Baratheon of Storm's End, with his descendants having the blood of the Durrandons flowing in their veins.[4]
This was the Durrandon sigil:
Reddit noted that a line from the show would've incorrectly planted the idea in my head:
quote:
The idea of the crowned stag becoming crowned after Robert's Rebellion was made up by the show. In S1, when Bran is having a lesson with Maester Luwin, he's describing different sigils and says House Baratheon is "a stag. A crowned stag now that Robert's King."

The Corlys character is supposed to be a badass key power player. This guy looks like a badass and supposedly he's one of the best actors in the show.

Sorry if this has been asked already, but general consensus of the first episode...good or bad?
I have it recorded and was just curious if it's decent and trying to avoid thread spoilers.
And I am prepared to be hurt by HBO again.

I really liked the first episode. Created a foundation for what is to come. A lot of houses were included in the first episode. In the council meetings you could already see the GoT at work. Positioning and plotting already going on in the first episode.
The Hightowers are a very rich family and they will be like the Lanisters and side with who they think will win. So no loyalty on their part.
The King's sister and her husband will be interesting to see which side they land on in the war to come.
Let's not forget the mention of Craghas Crabfeeder who is killing off pirates but at some point will probably end up being opportunistic like the Greyjoys while the rest of the world is at war.
Looking forward to the series.

Not real impressed with the princess, she seems a bit on the fugly side. Nothing awful, I just expected something hotter from this show.
Isnt she the one who everyone on the first page was bitching about being the non-binary actress? Looks like a woman to me, but agree I would’ve expected/hoped for a hotter princess in the likes of Dany. She’s definitely bucktoothed
