Blair Witch is the easy answer.

Holy Hell that movie was hyped in the papers with Ads saying it was the scariest thing ever.

We were in the infancy of "found-footage", well basically at the beginning...and they sold that movie as TRUE STORY...like they really found that footage.

I remember seeing it in the theaters...and halfway through about 1/3 of the audience walked out...with one big old dude standing up and shouting at the screen..."this is a load of crap!" before walking out.

Also Cabin in the Woods was tremendously hyped and much love on here I think...I don't see it...it's mildly amusing and poking fun of the horror genre but it's no Tucker and Dale.

I didn't find Midsomer scary
Came to post this. Midsomer wasn't bad, but not scary at all. Movies like the Witch and Midsomer should just be labeled suspense. They weren't bad movies, I was just highly disappointed because I expected them to be scary.

For all the critical acclaim it received, I thought It Follows was sort of lame.

When it came out, people overanalyzed the hell out of it. It was almost like they were determined to prove the movie had deeper themes beyond "teen sex is bad", even though the monster/creature/entity was basically an STD.

Crimson Peak. I was super pumped for it and it just fell flat.

I really liked it upon first viewing... But on rewatch, not so much.

You're right, its just a repackaging of Friday the 13th....if you have sex as a teenager, you're gonna die.

It was scary, but no, not world-changing level scary.

Blair Witch. The hype around it was unreal. I was expecting some insane experience and all I got was motion sickness

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought this. I was legit bored midway through, and the "shaky cam" was unappealing.

I get that it was unique, and it opened up something that some filmmakers have done good things with (and some terrible things with), but the movie itself wasn't all that interesting.

I will say, though, that I did have fun screwing with some people insisting it really was a true story.

Cabin in the Woods was brilliant. The only folks I know who didn't dig it were ones that expected it to be a classic slasher flick. When that's the expectation, then half of the amusement goes under the radar.

I really blame the marketing departments and reviewers here. Although it's a very poor horror movie, it's an amazing gothic romance movie.

If you don't go in expecting it to be scary, you'll have a much better time (even though the beginning is a bit slow).

ETA: I'd say pretty much any Dario Argento movie has failed to live up to the hype for me, but that's really a case of either you like Giallo or you don't.

Damn, so what does live up to the hype? I liked a lot of the movies mentioned. Hard to "hype" a horror movie tbh.

Has anybody said A Ghost Story with Casey Affleck? I thought this was going to be the next great creepy ghost horror and I'd rather watch puppies on YouTube than that boring pointless piece of shite
