Horror movie that just didn't live up to the hype.

For me, it was "The VVitch".

Christ, people were pumping this movie to no end when it came out.

It was mostly people who just wanted to write their own pretentious, self-aggrandizing reviews and the movie was merely an excuse to do so.

It was a GOOD movie and there were some tense moments, but people were hyping it as if it were the Citizen Kane of horror movies.

Yeah I remember arguing in real time with people on here who tried to claim it was scary

It wasn't a bad movie, but it wasn't that great. America really doesn't work well with folk horror because we're too young. And this movie was set in our literal infancy, which makes it even more jarring.

Also, the director builds tension but not dread. Hereditary was on this path until it ramps up the horror to 11 at the end. The Witch had no real payoff and it didn't really build anything so you can't make the "it's the journey" argument, either.

Blair Witch. The hype around it was unreal. I was expecting some insane experience and all I got was motion sickness . It was like the people who saw it early decided to play a cruel joke on everyone else.

I agree with all of this. It was a decent movie, but the hype was an overreach.

It was almost as if there were a contest to see who could write the most unnecessarily "wordy", pretentious review that made a point of slamming "traditional" Horror movies and their fans.

Much snobbery in the reviews I saw.

I can throw out a few.

The Babadook. frick this movie. You think the snobs (who don't really like horror) like the Witch? Listen to them jack off to this one.

House of 1000 Corpses. Zombie tried to remake TCM with a splash of Natural Born Killers. Seriously go re-watch this movie and it's full of cuts and inserts of shite. If you can't rip off the GOAT and do it straight up, you've failed.

90s Horror. There are like 100 "90s horror" movies that straight up suck. I Know What You Did Last Summer is tolerable, but the rest of the Scream ripoffs suck, but none more than Final Destination movies. This comment also applies to every sequel of Scream, too.

I'll give an off beat one: The Devil's Backbone. When this movie came out people legit tried to hype it up as the scariest movie ever and there is one scene that could be argued to be potentially scary in the whole thing. It's not a bad movie, but was WAY overhyped.

Went into the witch blind and thought it was a top 10 movie I’ve ever seen, not even limiting it to genre.

My gf at the time thought it was awful and Asked me 100 times what was being said. Unfortunate that many didn’t experience the dread, disgust and genuine ‘unclean’ feeling I had leaving the theater.

"Stranger Things" on Netflix. I did not find that entire series scary at all. I was hoping for more horror in that series and they just didn't deliver on that.

Decent show but not scary at all

i love 90s horror, but that's probably because i was right in the zeitgeist.

I would say "The Ring". When it came out, it was hyped as the next scariest thing. I was more ready to be scared during the whole thing than actually scared, if that makes sense.

I guess it's what horror means to you.

I could see what people liked about The Witch. I didn't like it at all. I had the same reaction to Hereditary.

I prefer horror to create emotions of suspense and fear in a way that entertains rather than disgusts me. I have a horror buff friend who much prefers that alien feeling of just being bathed in sadism and evil.

It's just not my bag, personally. So Hereditary didn't live up to the hype. It was better than The Witch, but mainly just left me feeling angry that I watched it.

I should be (born in 83) but horror movies were a secret obsession of mine and by that time period I was already trying to find obscure (for Lake Charles in the mid-late 90s, at least) options like Italian horror and the Evil Dead series. The internet was wonderful. Not having a way to acquire the movies was not.

I ended up with quite the collection of VHS titles that became worthless once I hit college b/c of DVDs.

This makes no sense to me. Hereditary was all about emotions and suspense and fear building over time.

I hate seeing kids die in movies but, man, that little shite drove me up a wall. Movie sucked.

Again, it's what you enjoy. Hereditary left no impression at conclusion in me except for disgust. Some people find that to be the mark of a great horror film. It's just not something I personally go for, even if I can appreciate elements of the craft.

I didnt find Midsomer scary but my wife did.

I found it to be incredibly strange with some disturbing moments, but not scary at all.
