HBO Max Removes Civil War Epic 'Gone With the Wind'
quote:

The move comes as media companies reappraise content in light of nationwide protests over police brutality and systemic racism after the death of George Floyd, a Black man killed by Minnesota police.

This the part where we burn things we don’t like and goose step to progress?

I've always been on Team Physical Media, particularly with books. Getting entertainment via streaming allows companies to edit or simply remove the info. See: Michael Jackson Simpsons episode, Toy Story (2?) removing adult joke, this...

I’m nauseous with worry over TCM folding to pressure and pulling the portion of their TV library that includes blackface, slavery, and stereotypical black servants and sidekicks.

You left out the last of the article that mentions this is temporary and that they have a plan for bringing it back...

HBO Max said Gone With the Wind will eventually return to the service with a "discussion of its historical context and a denouncement of those very depictions" of Black people and slavery.

Guess it’ll have a trigger warning. Ridiculous it had to be pulled in the first place.

Seriously?

I think we had a pretty big denouncement 150 years ago.

And discussion of historical context? Isn't that what fricking high school was for?

This is just liberal hogwash...racist liberals who still think white people watching Gone With the Wind are like, oh yeah...that's how I see the world today.

Might as well remove The Searchers (all the Native Americans were white guys) or Breakfast at Tiffany's (Mickey Rooney played a buck-toothed Asian).

This is what happened in the Soviet Union, to remove cultural items of importance because it's against the cause is the beginning of tyranny.

The scariest part is that they’re recording an indoctrination portion of the movie where they “put it in historical context” and “denounce its racist depictions”

Here we go trying to change history again. Disturbing.

All this is going to do is give people a reason to help physical media make a comeback.

It's one reason why I keep updating my blu-ray collection every once in a while.

I’m as liberal as they come but this is treading on dangerous ground. Censoring creative content isn’t the way to go.

That I’ve seen Gone with the Wind to know wtf the issue is.

why do people keep calling things like this censorship?

it's a PRIVATE company pulling a film from its streaming service so it can add a disclaimer to it when they put it back up

Company refuses to bake a cake for a gay wedding

It'S tHeiR rIgHt!!!!

HBO pulls a film

OMG it's THE USSR ALL OVER AGAIN!!

it's still censorship, just not the type that (as of now) is illegal (being done by the government)

and nobody is saying that what they did is illegal, just stupid, which is how markets work. people judge companies and producers based on available information (especially information relating to the market they're in). that's why you saw so many posts in this thread discuss market alternatives (owning physical media) and not calls for government investigation and prosection.
