There won’t be a new Star Wars film next year. And probably not the year after that either.

“We’re going to take a hiatus for a couple of years,” Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy tells EW. “And we’re taking the time to really look at where this is going from the standpoint of a saga.”

She said the creative brain trust will take that time to map out a wider narrative strategy. “We’re not just looking at what the next three movies might be, or talking about this in terms of a trilogy. We’re looking at: What is the next decade of storytelling?”

Not all projects are being canceled. A new series of movies fromThe Last Jedi writer-director Rian Johnson are still part of the plan, as are new films from Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss.

In fact, she revealed they are working in tandem. “As they finish Game of Thrones, they’re going to segue into Star Wars,” Kennedy said. “They’re working very closely with Rian.”

If Johnson ever touches another Star Wars film it will truly signify that Disney is as tone deaf as anyone in the LSU administration is. And it will lose them a shite ton of money short and long term.

Which cultural landmark has been run into the ground more: The Simpsons or Star Wars? I say it’s still The Simpsons but Star Wars sure is making a hard run at them.

as bad of a job as he did with tLJ, he also did a film like Brick and a TV episode like Ozymandias.

He's a smart guy that fricked up royally. If this is the path they are taking, I hope he's learned from his mistakes.

Prior to tLJ he had in my opinion a very good filmography.

He wanted to change the game up in a drastic way, have it be like Empire.

He failed and missed the mark. Bad. It happens.

If he learned something from this he’s still a smart talented guy. If he didn’t and is obstinate then this will be a disaster. It is what it is.

You know, it wouldn’t necessarily upset me if Rian Johnson made Star Wars movies unrelated to the current skywalker saga. TLJ on it’s own, in a vacuum, wasn’t perfect but it was pretty entertaining. It’s biggest problem was how it butchered the existing characters. If he writes new movies with all new characters then we won’t have expectations for him to subvert.

I'm not sure what she's trying to say.

If she's saying the Game of Thrones guys are in charge of overall "strategy" and will tell Rian basically what his stories have to accomplish and they can meddle, sure why not.

However, I personally will not choose to get burned again. Much like episode IX, I'm only going if it gets awesome viewer scores and only after I hit up wikipedia to see what happens and if it is something I would want to watch play out on the screen.

I still don't think any Rian Johnson trilogy sees the light of day, though.

Rogue One was largely rescued by Tony Gilroy (writer of the Bourne movies, director of Michael Clayton). Members of the cast have hinted that Rogue One’s story received a major overhaul. Ben Mendelsohn said something to the effect of “there’s a very different version of this film floating around somewhere.”
