Nah maybe I am buying into it too much but I am starting to believe the NK set a trap.
The NK is a verified Greenseer (he's in Brans wargs ffs).
The could of ended the group with spears on the island but he waited why?
He needs dragon fire to break the magical barrier of the Wall.
He needed a dragon. He knew from visions this would happen and laid the trap as such.
The NK is the "Queen" of the hive mind. He is essentially the One Ring to rule them all per say.
People are caught up in the death of Viseron to see this was an elaborate trap executed perfectly.
I've already said as much but I expect Winterfel to be a major battle site again next season.

I have a crackpot theory: Jon will ride Drogon, not Rhaegal.
I am firmly in the Dany will be preggers bus. She will be unable to ride Drogon for the fight for Dawn, but as foreshadowed, Drogon senses his Targaryen blood and will allow him to ride.
Bran will warg Rhaegal.
This allows Jon and Drogon to die a hero's death together. Rhaegal will be collateral dmg as well.
Dany will be left with the kid.
Possibly a new house formed from Stark/Targaryen.
Ayra will wind up with Gendry in Storms End.
Tyrion will rebuild Lannisport/Casterly Rock.
Sansa will stay in Winterfel.
I think King's Landing and the Red Keep is destroyed leaving Dany to stay in Dragonstone.
None of this will happen now because I thought of it
