Did you pay much attention in school to English conflicts for succession, Saxon and Norman invasions, European royal bloodline entanglements, hundred year wars, etc? Is the series more interesting than real life because of its fantasy elements?

I love actual history.

But the two (actual history and history in fantasy/sci fi series) are so unrelated that I don't compare the two to see which I consider more interesting. They're different animals altogether.

My degree is in History, so yeah I like real history. Though I've studied far more Roman and American history than Medieval Europe.

Why can't you study both at the same time?

Very interesting post.

I love history, my only other friend that really enjoys these books is also a huge history nut.

I think there may be a correlatin between history and GoT fans.

Was that an actual scene from South Park? I'd like to see it.

I love history and GoT.

Not a huge fan of American History (except for the early wars and WWII), but a pretty big fan of European history, Chinese history, and Japanese history.

I am a history nerd and like GoT. I like how Martin uses history in his books.

I have a minor in History (because I like it). Concentrated mostly on Ancients and American history.

I love the GOT books.

Yes history was easily my favorite subject in highschool. I try to read at least one pure history book a year and enjoy the hell out of historical fiction. GRRM also loves history and it shows in ASOIAF.

Yes. Joffrey reminds me a lot of Edward II, Renley of James I (um, for some reason) and the Cersei/Joffrey relationship is very similar to Nero and his mother. I see a lot of other similarities between GoT and European history as well, but I'm not surprised. Harry Potter is basically just a lot of existing European folklore set all in one place.

I was always interested in Ancient Civilizations through the Roman Empire part of History. The show has gotten me interested in European history.
