I actually recommend Barbara W. Tuchman A Distant Mirror: The Calamitous 14th Century to anyone that enjoyed Game of Thrones. It really gets at the break down of civil society during the period which is something that Martin revels in.

Wiki article on war of the roses... It truly is a real life GoT. You have lancasters and Yorks in the North. A crazy king. Banners switching alliances and exiled royalty to france. Good Stuff!!

Politically it kind of fits but I think France during the same period is a better analog. You have armed bands raiding the countryside much like the Riverlands are depicted in GoT.

I read Tuchman's book the March of Folly, I'll check this one out as well I've heard it was good.
