I think my issues with the episode, even though I liked it, were how some things played out. They could have given her a better death.

1)dying as she sets the trench on fire to save the retreat

2) Saving Davos from death

3) or setting herself on fire to take out a few WW to stop some of the dead.

Her death was very underwhelming

She has been a dead woman walking since nothing she did put Stannis on the throne. She saved quite a few lives by being the one to light the trench.

Im not saying it was a great death, but she had given up quite a while ago. She was a broken woman already.

Yes, my problem was Arya sneaking through all the MFers to use her 65" vertical on the Night King. I thought that whole sequence was horrible. Episode was fine otherwise.

This a show with dead people forming an Army, Giants, Dragons and BS sorcery and you're peeved about Arya jumping real high?

that doesn't make any sense

a distraction would just put them all on more alert and lessen her chances to get past them

Also, let's not forget the fact that the NK stopped her initially. He knew she was coming. The moment he grabbed her neck, I bet most of you were in shock. That's conveniently ignored because she was ultimately successful. But it wasn't this seamless kill people are acting like it was.

Saw this on a USA article on the episode. This been mentioned yet on here?

Plus they had to kill melisandre because she was pretty and pretty doesn’t sit well with the girl power crowd

They prefer pudgy girls with pig noses doing Batman moves

Why does she have to go past them? There are castle walls surrounding that entire area. Yes if you're on the ground floor you have to go through that single access point, but if you go up to the walls you can get to it from other directions. I kept wondering to myself "Jon Snow lived in this castle his entire life and he can't find a way around that dragon?"

To all complaining that Bran did nothing. Bran did what he was supposed to do, that is to lure the NK out to a set spot for an ambush. The plan fell apart when Dany flew off after the Dothraki went down and JS followed. Arya saved their asses.

they knew the size of the army. They knew they wouldn't be marching in formation. They knew it would be a massive overwhelming horde of chopping and ripping undead hell.

Why would you send a mounted inferior force right into the belly of that beast. It makes no sense at all from a strategic standpoint.

Because their swords just caught on fire, they're hyped as hell, and the optimism is now through the roof. They quickly meet their maker, and every soul omin Winterfell now fully comprehends how poorly this is about to go.

Plot device? Maybe, but it worked imo.

They should have used their two biggest groups in pockets throughout the walls.

i'm on the fence with yalls recent Dothraki charge argument. To SFP and Coco's point, that was an ignorant battle tactic to blindly send your cavalry against a hoard that massively outnumbers them.

but to Salmon's point. it's fiction and made for fantastic scene with the build up of the swords being lit by the Red Queen and then one by one going out when they meet the dead on the battlefield.

pretty cool way for the Dothraki to go out IMO, despite it being technically a really bad tactical move on our Hero's part.

Lets be honest Aejon is not known as being a master tactician. Battle of the Bastards, he yea we have a Giant but lets not give him any armor or a weapon, that is piss poor planning

I think Melisandre made a deal to sacrifice herself to win the war or use powers to light shite on fire.

Yep, because it felt out of place to me. I get why people liked it. I didn't. Life goes on.

This episode caused a massive readers VS watchers schism.

What this all comes down to is HBO bought incredible potential with no planned payoff. They bought an unfinished product from a snake oil salesman with writers block.

The books are incredible and provide fantastic source material. Martin promised to finish them and didn't deliver. When the series passed the books the quality plummeted because the creative mind and the fleshed out source material were gone.

The result is a board room of writers and producers finishing his story. So we didn't get his ending. We got their ending. And it is vastly different than the flow the books were aiming at because the show took on a life of its own and there's no backdrop.

Characters in a novel don't have contracts and fan clubs and producers to answer to, etc....

I seriously doubt Martin ever finishes the books, but if he does I really hope he writes them with a full satisfying ending vastly different from the show.

Exactly. If she dies there I doubt they'd be in this thread complaining about how she slipped past the WW. Something that bothers them so much would be ignored because the real fans got a surprise death.

I thought the direction was pretty fantastic

I think it's pretty obvious that you decided you were going to hate everything about this season before you even watched it

lighting is part of direction and the lighting was terrible

and most of the action was Greengrass style, which i loathe (and most people outside of Michael Bay fans do as well)
