he could also be waiting for theon.
remember, it was bran who witnessed theon sacking winterfell and executing ser rodrick

I agree that it's a Martin scenario, but I don't think it will be nearly as homogenized as it is on the show. there are so many other characters at play and there's no way they can all come together as one force.

I think we see the WWs resolved mid-season and then return to KL for a Mad King 2.0 scenario with Cersei to close things out. She will attempt to capitalize on the weak Northern forces after they defeat the WWs, fail, and then turn to the "frick it" option. Jaime takes her down.

one thing that must be addressed for the dead march south is the issue of the NK now riding a dragon. i get that the wight army and the other WW's are...walking. so it takes time to walk from eastwatch to winterfell/etc.

but the NK is flying business class.
where the frick is he and why is he not softening up the defenses right now?

I disagree. I think they’ll be around till the very end. It’s been about them since the opening scene of episode 1. Suddenly making the entire series about something so temporary such as the Iron Throne wouldn’t make much sense to me

as insignificant as it may seem, it is objectively the best part of the series. the political intrigue and machinations and chess matches are what made the show unique.

when you distill it down into a good vs evil showdown with monsters and zombies and dragons, it turns into just another run-of-the-mill schlocky fantasy story you can find at an airport bookstore.

WW will be done by the end of episode 4. 5 and 6 will be sorting all the other stuff out.

I think the show is kind of past that. Even if the WWs and their army is defeated half way through and there is a fight for the throne, it’ll probably be just a fight. All that chess match stuff doesn’t seem to be what the writers are focusing on anymore.

I mean, that’s what it is lol. The iron throne adds intrigue, but the entire show is centered on the WW. Robb Stark could’ve run a train on all of Westeros and taken King’s Landing and they’d still be in the same situation today. I.e. all of the political intrigue IS insignificant to the overall story. It absolutely adds intrigue, but that isn’t what the show is centered on. If the last three episodes are everyone fighting for a throne after lots of people came together to defeat the real enemy, then I think they missed the point.

I like this. It’s ties up a lot of loose ends.

yeah, because they can't do it as well as Martin can and they know it

im not saying we'll get some classic chess match stuff like in S1-4, but they'll resolve it

I thought they did a pretty good job showing what he's been up to with the dead kid spiked to a wall surrounded by a ring of human limbs.

Comparing The Tarly's execution to the beheading of the baby killing Janos Slynt was a bit of a reach. Being a member of the Nights Watch who is going against their vows is a bit different (that is true treason, in a place that can't afford it) than the leader of a House you just defeated on the battlefield. You won, he doesn't need to kneel.

OK, let's put Randyll Tarly into perspective here.

He was a sworn bannerman of the Tyrells, much like the Karstarks, Umbers etc to the Starks.

Queen Margery was a Tyrell. She and the rest of that house was massacred in the Sept, leaving only Olanna Tyrell left. She declared for Danaerys after Cersei did that, and seized the throne.

Randyll Tyrell chose to abandon the Tyrells, he led the attack (alongside the Lannisters) on the Reach, they killed the last Tyrell, looted all the wealth and foodstuffs and carried it off. In the process they killed many people they knew (Dickon was upset by this).

Despite his crimes, Dany offered him a full pardon and no consequences if he bent the knee. He refused to do so, even when fully aware that execution was the option. Even after Tyrion suggested him taking the Black, Randyll refused that before Dany could answer. He defiantly said "she's not my queen, she can't order me to do that".

Robb Stark chopped Karstark's head off for less.
Sansa (with Jon at least aware, if not actively consenting), executed Ramsey, a prisoner after the Battle of the Bastards... not by beheading, or hanging. But chaining him to a chair and feeding him to his own hounds.
Sansa and Arya had Littlefinger, the acting Lord of the Vale, executed after he had played a huge role in rescuing Jon, for being a conspiring shite-stirrer. Cut his throat and let him bleed out on the floor. This, while the man was still technically your ally.

Sam needs to put his big boy pants on. Oh, and btw, if he's asking for pardons, he kinda forgot to ask for one for leaving the Night's Watch. Jon let him go to the Citadel, but he left that. He's trucking around Westeros with Gilly and baby Sam, with no intent to take the Black back. Technically, he's lucky there's no Ned Stark around to chop HIS head off for abandoning his watch.
I thought that was what he was going to ask, actually.

would not surprise me if the Cersei/Gold Company story is a red herring of sorts and it falls apart quickly and violently.

The bit in front of the Iron Throne says it all, I think.

Cersei hired them to be her army.
20 thousand show up, a few less... Euron killed a few on board. Over cheating at dice, which he pretty much admits he was doing.
Euron is now the man standing beside the Throne, the Golden Company is loyal to... money; and Euron is cheating them on that before they even get off the boat.

Nah, no chance that doesn't end up going badly.
