sure seems like it would have been more interesting in retrospect to keep aemon alive at this point in the story...dany (and Jon) would have a blood relative at the wall with at least anecdotal knowledge of the walker threat, and so would have been guiding the effort to plan the fight
I'm not sure I'm all in on what appears to be the plan of Sam and Gilly "discovering" the 3000 year old solution although maybe I just don't like those characters much

They needed a reason to send Sam to become a maester

I have no spoilers in me, but the only thing I expect is for Euron to attack Dany's fleet. Other than that and Cersei being pissed off that everyone is against her now, I have no idea how the premiere will play out.
I imagine that Jamie and Cersei are going to have some sort of a Come to Jesus meeting. That look on his face after watching her crowned says it all. A lot like Littlefinger's look after watching Jon be anointed King in the North.

but they already had a maester, who also happened to be a targ, at the wall
take Sam out of the story completely and what's lost, really?
aemon was the more interesting character and his heritage fit nicely into the looming plot developments. Sams just a fat kid with no other options

Jon was afraid the Red Witch would burn him, if she found out his true identity, since he was royal blood. Since they decided to cut Sam & Gilly's trip to Bravvos from the show. They had to get rid of Aemon some how.

she knew mance rayders son was royal but did she know about aemon?
I don't remember
anyway I just thought aemon and his back story was very cool and could have been a better protagonist than fat Sam. Que sera
maybe we see marwyn (or a stand in) soon?

What are the odds HBO Go won't be able to handle all the streaming tonight?

New episode of Attack on Titan last night, new episodes of Twin Peaks and GOT tonight. What a time to be alive

I may cry if HBOgo fricks up and won't load the episode on time like previous years.
Idk if I can take that heartache again.

Sam/gilly storyline was pretty bad but he's the only one that's figured out that Dragon glass killed WWs and is still young enough to travel and tell Dany this while she is at dragon stone.
They needed him to die because he would've detested the Jon snow betrayal and would've been killed likely anyway if he spoke out against it.
Passing the torch to Sam makes sense IMO. Wasting time showing Sam frick gilly doesn't make sense tho
