That article states that HBO will only make 10 episodes next season. That is a major mistake IMO. As the books get larger as the series continues so does the show. Especially after seeing the ratings climb, I think the return on investment of producing two more episodes for season is well worth it.

I saw in the comments and in the past on here that the second book may be divided into 2 seasons of 10 eps each. May just be wishful thinking, but I can hope.

he's 12 when was the last time you saw a responsible 12 year old. He's a product of the people his loser parents surrounded him with. Down the road he may or may not be better than them, but right now at 12 years old his problem is that he was never trained to lead.
was he born yet, when his older brother died?

Is there even a main character? Seems to me it's a bunch of characters with no one being more important than the other.

Joffrey doesn't have an older brother.

My main characters have always been Jon, Dany, and Tyrion. The rest all have roles to play and are important, but I've always felt the story revolved around those three.

Book 2 could be done in 10 episodes. There won't be an entire episode spent on setting up the world like in Season 1, and I feel there are a few story lines that could be condensed in Book 2. I won't go into them here for obvious reasons, but I think will start a Season 2 speculation/spoiler thread when Episode 10 airs.
Book 3 would be near impossible to do in 10. They'll have to find a natural breakpoint, and there is one obvious breakpoint in that novel.
Anyway...

There is absolutely no way in hell I can see them pulling off book three in ten episodes. Im with you they have to break it off where you and I both know they should or we're going to lose a lot of depth in the story. There is something on every page in that book that moves the story along

In the 2nd episode the Queen, when visting Bran Stark, told Cate Stark that her oldest son had died. She said that her son looked like Bran, and was a strong fighter but died of a fever. She said Robert was so upset that he pounded his fist until they bled.

I'm honestly not sure. As far as the tv show goes they haven't mentioned that again. I don't think that was even in the books. I assume they put that in their for you to get some sort of sympathy for Cersei.

in the series Cerci says she gave birth to one of Robert's legit heirs that died in infancy, so no Joff was not born yet. a slightly different version was mentioned in the books

hmm, I don't remember this in the books at all. Guess I was wrong.

I don't remember it either

Nor do I.
They mentioned in Episode 2 that the baby died an infant. Its just a scene to humanize Cersei. Don't put any more thought into it than that.

***Caution: Book talk below regarding things that have already happened in the HBO show.***
I seem to have a vague recall from the books of it being implied that Cersei made sure any potential ligitimate children from Robert did not survive, via some type of abortion. I think she drank some type of potion.

The first child, supposedly a true heir since Cersie says he had black hair, died as an infant (tv version).
I think the child / his death is also mentioned in another episode (7?). When Robert and Cersie are talking to each other prior to Robert going on the boar hunt.
