So we get comments from you about it being "solid," "pretty damn good," and "strong," you just don't like cabs and that makes the whole thing horrible?
No, it's the tangent he takes with nonsensically rapping about the cab.
He says he's going to tell us about "how he became the Prince of a town called Bel-Air", but half the song is about the damn cab, just because that's all he could come up with to make the song rhyme.
If you're going to tell us about how you became the Prince of a town called Bel-Air, then do it. The cab, it's smell, it's rarity (WTF?), and about what time it dropped you off are meaningless, and have no place in this very brief story.

Saved by the Bell is better.

Nah, you miss the point. He's already the Fresh Prince, whether he's in Philly or Bel-Air. He's telling you the story of how he got to Bel-Air...from the original conflict that led to him being sent by his mom, to the cab ride to his actual house. How he became the FPoBA is exactly what he tells you in the rap.
Also, just dawned on me that I should be pissed that his mom on the show wasn't this lady:

That bothered me from jumpstreet. Or at least cast an actress similar.
Between this and the taxi rap point that Miyagi brought up, I may jump on his bandwagon now.

That makes a little more sense, but it wasn't the original conflict to the cab ride, but rather the original conflict, and the cab ride. Nothing about a cross country trip in the Porsche (why do they live in such a shitty part of town when they can afford a brand new Porsche?), or a flight, but two damn verses describing the cab, including calling it rare? Dude, he was reaching for a rhyme, and failed.

That's always bothered me.

The theme is part of the first episode. the pilot starts with him getting out of the cab and knocking on the front door, in the same clothes as in the theme song. So the theme, "cab ride and details" are part of the first episode and therefor make the dribble about the cab somewhat relevant.

But seriously, I love Fresh Prince. I caught an episode the other day where Will is on the basketball team and he has a nightmare about the responsibility of being a father.

what are you talking about a cross country trip in a porsche? he took a plane.

It's the opening theme song/credits for a TV show...it has to be short. In the full intro he talks about not wanting to leave, flying first class, etc.
Here is the whole intro they showed a few times: LINK
And here is the whole song, including where he talks about passing up his ride at the airport and chooses to take a cab: LINK
ETA: and the lyrics:
quote:
Now, this is the story all about how
My life got flipped-turned upside down
And I'd like to take a minute
Just sit right there
I'll tell you how I became the prince of a town called Bel Air
In west Philadelphia born and raised
On the playground was where I spent most of my days
Chillin' out maxin' relaxin' all cool
And all shootin some b-ball outside of school
When a couple of guys
Who were up to no good
Startin making trouble in my neighborhood
I got in one little fight and my mom got scared
She said 'You're movin' with your auntie and uncle in Bel Air'
I begged and pleaded with her day after day
But she packed my suite case and sent me on my way
She gave me a kiss and then she gave me my ticket.
I put my walkman on and said, 'I might as well kick it'.
First class, yo this is bad
Drinking orange juice out of a champagne glass.
Is this what the people of Bel-Air living like?
Hmmmmm this might be alright.
But wait, I hear the prissy, bourgeois and all that
Is this the type of place that they should send this cool cat?
I don't think so
I'll see when I get there
I hope they're prepared for the prince of Bel-Air
Well uh, the plane landed and when I came out
There was a dude who looked like a cop standing there with my name out
I ain't trying to get arrested yet.
I just got here!
I sprang with the quickness, like lightening disappeared
I whistled for a cab and when it came near
The license plate said fresh and it had dice in the mirror
If anything I can say is that this cab was rare
But I thought 'Man forget it' - 'Yo homes to Bel-Air'
I pulled up to the house about seven or eight
And I yelled to the cabbie 'Yo homes smell ya later'
I looked to my kingdom
I was finally there
To sit on my throne as the Prince of Bel Air

You mean the one where the scout is at the game and doesn't scout will because he missed the game winning shot, even though he scored every single point in the game?
Posted on 5/2/13 at 1:14 pm to Displaced
It might be.
He goes against another phenom player on the other team who has a kid (hence the nightmare from Will) and he lets the guy make the game-winning shot out of sympathy.

Check the whole song (and lyrics I posted). It basically explains everything you bitched about.

One of my favorite comedy shows i've ever seen. No matter how many times i've seen each episode i'll watch it and laugh several times.
