even that scene had its own humor to it. i mean, out of all the takes they did, they couldn't find a better one than the hat getting in the way of the hug and uncle phil having to knock it off his head? Will has his monologue about how he doesnt need his father (very dramatic) then breaks down in UP's arms (sad), but the hat gets in the wy and is awkwardly thrown off the set (still makes me smile)

Not very funny, IMO

doesn't take itself too seriously (for the most part)

I would hope not, given the absurdity of the premise.

Good thing you put in the "for the most part", cuz I would have dropped some shite on you about the racially motivated episodes, and the one(s?) where Will's father makes an appearance

I can only speak to my own opinions. I don't feel it is overrated. I think it meets exactly what it was trying to do.

Of the 90s shows I watched regularly, Fresh Prince, BMW, and SBTB, I believe that Saved by the Bell is easily the most overrated. Doesn't mean I didn't watch a ton of episodes, but it never did it for me the way it does for some of you.

BMW

Talk about overrated...that's one that this board loves to death, and I always thought it was pretty meh. I caught it here and there, but it didn't appeal to me. Looking at when it aired (93-00), I started high school in 93, so I think I might've outgrown a show like BMW by that point.

No, I'm correct about this.

This board overrates The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. It wasn't a horrible show, but it wasn't a great comedy of the 90's as this board makes it out to be.

It's simply not on the level of great 90's comedies like Seinfeld and The Simpsons.

I'm 26 and love both FPOBA and TWY. They're both fantastic.

Just because it is (arguably) not on the same level as one of the most pioneering shows ever (Simpsons) and one of the often-considered best shows of all time (Seinfeld)* doesn't mean it's not in the "great comedies of the 90s" list. It certainly is, even if it's not for you.

* I have never liked Seinfeld. Ever. I've tried to watch it several times and I simply think it sucks (though it sure does think itself is hilarious). To me, it's just not good. But I'd never say that it wasn't one of the best shows of the 90s...just because I don't like it doesn't negate the fact that almost every other person in existence does.

How many Emmy's did it win? How many was it nominated for? If it's on the short list of great comedies of the 90's, then it certainly was nominated and/or won multiple emmys, correct?

Not almost every other person in existence likes Fresh Prince, like they do Seinfeld.
