Just finished it for the first time in about 15 years.
Great movie and Kingsley is phenomenal as usual.
For sure watch it if you have never seen it.
Its the perfect mid 90's movie.

It's a great movie.
I would recommend Bobby Fischer Against the World documentary - it's on YouTube.
Pawn Sacrifice wasn't bad but Toby Maguire becomes sort of insufferable.
It's really just a movie about his famous match with Spassky and his deepening paranoia.

I watched it for the first time a few months ago after only seeing it in bits and pieces as a kid.
I was not only struck by how touching and emotional it was, but also how great it looked. Then I saw that Conrad Hall was the cinematographer and it all made sense.

“Don’t move until you see it.” A truly great movie.

it's weirdly (or maybe not) a hard sell to get people to watch it, but everyone ive convinced loves it. awesome movie.
the scene where the dad is telling the teacher that josh is better at chess than she will ever be at anything is lit.

That kid was a hell of an actor

I might be wrong, but isn't it "In Search of Bobby Fischer"?
Another one I remember liking along the same lines as this movie (that came out around the same time) was Little Man Tate.
ETA: Mandela effect strikes again. It is Searching for Bobby Fischer. I swear I remember the title the other way.

I didn't know until after I saw the movie that it was based on a true story. The real Josh retired early on from chess to pursue a career in martial arts. A true Renaissance Man.

By the end of that movie you want to pin a "Dad of the Year" medal on Joe Mantagnia.

I watched this yesterday as well. Hadn’t seen it in years and years. It’s just as awesome as I remembered it being.
The kid was such a great actor. And it’s such a great story and has all kinds of different aspects of drama (the son/dad drama rings more true to me now than ever).
“You’ve lost. You just don’t know it yet.”
Incredible movie.

I remember watching it when it first came out on HBO. I went out and bought a cheap Parker Brothers chess set to teach myself how to play.

The kid actor’s name was Max Pomeranc. Found this on IMBd...
Max was born in Manhattan, New York. He attended P.S.9 for elementary school and Wagner Jr. High for grades 6-8. He rarely talked about his film work and was part of the rowdier crowd. Max spent a lot of time playing handball or messing around with his friends in the neighborhood. He last film was the TV movie Journey in 1995, and he has not been particularly interested in acting since then.

The entire cast is incredible, a lot of very good actors with minor roles spread throughout that movie.
