In the book they estimate fewer than 30 years before the sun’s energy dims so much that it’s starts fricking up all kinds of stuff up.

So yea, with it taking decades to get to his destination, figure stuff out, then send that info BACK to earth…yea, it’s a race against time

Watched this Saturday night. Freaking loved it. Best movie I’ve seen in awhile.

Well I guess that explains why these same movie studios are doing so well and not failing and selling their companies to streamers, huh?

Man, I would love to know how this made sense in your head when you typed it

Hollywood film companies are going broke from lack of engagement and consumption. . .they got us right where they want us!!!!

What?

Holy shite that's a great movie.

I bought and read the book a few months ago since I liked The Martian book so much (and the movie was also really good).

I think PHM is about as good of a book adaptation as they could've done. I took my six year old a month or two ago and we both LOVED it. It's just so good and such a good/cool story. I'll definitely be buying it on DVD and watching it once it hits free streaming as soon as possible.

It would take approximately 12 years on Earth, and about 4 years for those on the ship to reach Tau Ceti. Relativity is crazy. It would take less time for the probes to return as they have less mass and squishy humans and get up to speed faster and brake later. The Hail Mary ship accelerated half the way and decelerated the other half. The probes accelerated, cruised, and then decelerated. The trip out is a complex calculus problem. The probe trip back is a slightly less complex calculus problem.

I didn't realize this was the same author of the Martian. I definitely enjoyed the book better than the movie for that one. The whole nuclear core and using it to keep the Rover warm while he was cruising around the planet was completely missing from the movie and that was a critical element of the story.

I still have 47 Expanse books to finish first *sigh*. I used to have so much more time to read once upon a time

When approaching the speed of light, it really doesn't matter.

Agreed. They did as good as they could with PHM. They said the screening was almost four hours long so I’m sure they could add some depth to certain scenes.

My issue with the Martian when I first watched was how easy they made the trip to the final shuttle at the end of the movie. In the book it was a long planned, treacherous journey I figured that would be a big part in the movie. The humor was missing with Matt Damon as Watney imo but still solid

I think it was you that recommended the Mars Trilogy to me a while back in a Martian thread. Those were fantastic. I need to go back through them.

Yeah I remember being disappointed with the lack of that huge dust storm he had to get past. I actually read the book twice (which is very rare for me), so I don't remember details, but I do remember thinking they did a good job of adapting it outside of the dust storm and that journey, as you mentioned.

I think they still had humor, but I think it was more of the Damon casting that lacked in that department. And I like Damon just fine, but the humor in The Martian mostly came off as sort of lame because of him IMO. It didn't feel natural at all.

Who are we recasting in that role in 2015? I didn't have a problem with Damon, but I'm open to other options.

That’s a good question. Damon wasn’t as bad as hanks in da Vinci code but still didn’t quite fit for me. At the time I thought Chris Pratt could have pulled it off. RDJ obviously would have been a home run. Maybe Sam Rockwell.
With that said I think gosling was perfect as grace.
What do you think?

The book is phenomenal. What they were able to do in 2.5 hours with that material is insane. I suggest reading the book, but the movie captures it pretty damn well

Absolutely but this is one of the few times where the audible book is a better experience

Finally watched project hail Mary with my kid

I checked out my 7yo from school and took him last thursday. 1030am showing, just he and I in the theater. My dad did the same thing when I was a kid and took me to Masters of the Universe and it's one of my fondest memories. Safe to say I picked the better movie but I smiled when the first preview was the remake.

Mine was full on bawling so I pulled him into my lap...immediately lost my fight to hold back too.

Damn what a ride.

Yeah, I liked the Martian movie, but it failed to truly capture the book. I felt like they cut some important stuff. I felt like PHM did a better job of trimming it down to the basic essence of the story.

I think Damon did fine and don't need a recasting. But I just think some of the humor fell flat, and for me that was because of Damon's delivery.

Like coquettish ingenue, "Mark Watney, space pirate," "I can fly like Ironman," etc. And not that the dialogue itself is bad, but just his delivery was off.

If you had to recast it, I think some of the ones someone mentioned already would work, especially someone like Rockwell. Pratt would've been good too. RDJ, meh...but I am in the minority on him (not a huge fan). I think Gosling would have done well too (since he was really good in this). Someone like Ryan Reynolds would've pulled off the humor a good bit better.

But again, I think Damon did a fine job in The Martian.

I see above someone said there was a ~4 hour cut of PHM? I'd actually like to sit down and watch that if it was available (hopefully on the DVD). All the science shite in the book was fascinating (same with The Martian).

Has anybody read Andy Weir's middle novel (Artemis)? I have heard it isn't very good, especially compared to The Martian and PHM.

Bad take. I like Ryan Reynolds a good bit but Gosling is certainly the better actor and has done really well in comedies too. Absolutely zero reason for him to try and be Ryan Reynolds.

i swear they described the construction of that mars space elevator so well i have a hard time believing it doesn't really exist
