My little girl was mesmerized and now I wish I’d taken her to see it in theaters. TC was about as good as one could hope for and way better than depp imo
(no one is touching wilder). Obviously there was some diversity in the movie, but none of it took away from the story and that’s all I really care about. The black characters just happened to be black, their skin color wasn’t inherent to the plot and they all did fine jobs, I thought the main bad guy was brilliant. Best kids movie I’ve seen in a while and much better than anything Disney has put out in a long time.

I wish I could’ve seen more hugh grant he was fantastic.

Agree 100%. They did the diversity thing right. It didn't distract from anything. I loved the movie. Turned it on the other night with my wife not expecting much at all and I was pleasantly surprised.

My wife and I watched it the other day and it was quite charming. It's kind of hard to get upset at characters of color when one of the principal supporting characters is an orange little guy. As was mentioned, the color was matter of fact and not thrown in your face.

It was a fun ride and the ending had my wife crying.

If I had to guess, people like you probably convinced him it would be a woke shitfest

Blame me, or the studios who gave us race swapped Ariel, Cleopatra, Ann Boleyn, Issac Newton, Elves, Dwarves and Hobbits, then lied to everyone about how it's about 'diversity and inclusion' when it never was?

Huh.

We watched it with my four year old son a few weeks ago. It wasn't bad. I don't know if I paid quite enough attention to follow along with everything that happened, so maybe if I had I would've liked it more. I also thought it was a little too "magical" (and overly CGI'd) if that makes sense.

But it was definitely better than I was expecting it to be.

With the original so endearing (though a bit odd, tbh) and then the Depp version, I'm sure at the onset many were simply asking "Why does anyone NEED this?".

Chalemet is a popular young actor, so there's that. And Wonka is considered safe and popular. I mean, c'mon...candy.

But you'd have to be blind to not acknowledge there's been a trend of really bad reboots and sequels coming down the line in recent years. Some rare exceptions, but yeah, good on them if they made a decent flick.

I started to watch it without the rest of the family and turned it off during the first musical number.

This week my kids wanted to watch it so I gave it another shot. It didn't really hold my attention and I was bored at times.

Kids liked it, but I'm not sure it will be one they re-watch.

Bro, there are little orange men running around in that universe. I think it being overly magical should have been understood

i completely agree, and would never call one "needed" but this was delightful Christmas movie.

if you liked Paddington, this is right up that alley.

I'm not a fan of it. I really wanted to like it, but the writers seemed to go a bit too far with his character and his abilities. There are some really good elements in the movie, but overall it felt forced and was flat to me. TC was very good, but I wish he had a better script to work with. The music was not very good either.

I did think it was well directed for the most part, but the CGI was incredibly bad at times.

My daughter loves it though, which is good. Kids don't pick up on the movie elements; they just enjoy if it's fun. It is definitely a fun movie despite its flaws.

exactly. What makes the original so compelling was that there was a mystery to the magic. Was it science? Was it magic? Was it both? It also fit within the realm. In this one he just whips up magic on the fly at every turn. It was extremely overplayed, and it undermined the mystery of the original. Here it just was used as plot armor. Plus the dude is poor yet he has all of these mystical items from around the world. It was a poorly conceived and fleshed out plot unfortunately. Too bad, because there is a good movie in there somewhere waiting to bloom.

I have no problem with diversity. Unnecessary, forced diversity can ruin a movie or show instantly for me. I don't need someone else's contrived obsession with race, gender, sexual orientation, etc. forced on me. I just want to be entertained.

I mean the original movie cast is diverse just by having females and oompa loompas, small people, from all over the world.

And in the book the oompas are white with brown hair. Not orange with green hair.

I know I'm a day late, but is this dude really upset over the race of fictional characters of creatures that don't even fricking exist? I could understand if it's a real person, but you getting upset cause they changed the races of mermaids, elves, dwarves, and hobbits. Better hope they don't cast a black Tinkerbell or my man is going to flip out.
