I read somewhere that is a common way it's said in the Midwest.

Overrated.

It's a decent movie but it's down the line on the list of great baseball movies.

Kind of my thought as well. Not bad, but the premise is so absurd it's kind of hard to take it somewhat seriously. Even for fiction. There are other baseball and sports movies (even sentimental ones) I like, much, much better.

Meh. The dumb one-liner isn’t near enough to overshadow James Earl Jones epic monologue about baseball. So. frick you.

Field of Dreams is one of my favorite movies. There are imperfect aspects, but the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. At its core, it is just a beautiful movie about a boy trying to reconcile with his dad and his past.

There are a half dozen lines that might could work better than “have a catch”, but I don’t understand the amount of hate that it receives.

This might be a hot take but I’m fine with that.

The most overrated sports movie around.

It’s not a BAD movie but it’s routinely heralded as one of the best sports movies of all time.

It’s not even the best Kevin Costner baseball movie (for love of the game)

As another poster said..It’s really not a baseball movie. It’s a movie about growing older and coming to terms with regrets from your youth. It’s a common theme that plays out for most of the characters in the film. Baseball was just the vehicle they used to convey some of the different stories. Not really crucial to the film that every baseball aspect be perfect.

And the best scene was when Moonlight Graham steps of the field to save the daughter, followed closely by Darth Vader’s speech, and then asking dad to have a catch.

Yeah...few things drive me crazier than seeing an actor play a sports figure and being so terrible at it.

Yeah I agree. I know actors weren’t all jocks but goddamn did they not at least play little league?

Some of the silliest sports moments are the baseball flashbacks in Cobb. TLJ looked horrible. He was old and those old baggie uniforms don’t help but damn, just painful to watch.

I've chimed in on this thread a few times, but overall this is my take.

It's really a father-son story, regrets for them and many others, but not the same for everyone.

I'm a little upset that I got into a back and forth with another poster in this thread. I do prefer if the baseball was more accurate, but it's not really a baseball movie. Does anyone think Frequency was about radios?

There are really great baseball movies, more than any other sports genre imo.

It's truly not what the movie was about.

Being from north Louisiana I’ve noticed we have a few midwesternisms that have amalgamated into our lexicon.

I feel like I’ve said it both ways growing up but I can’t be sure that it didn’t originate from the movie

Obviously, almost no on know what Jackson's swing looked like, but we all know it didn't look like that! And if they were gonna' do a movie about Griffey, Jr...you'd damn sure better have a guy that can somewhat mimic that swing.

Babe Ruth is said to have modeled his swing after Jackson, so do with that what you will

Peak monologue on baseball but I find it perplexing that a radical black activist as his character was & especially in the time period would be so nostalgic for the game. People who are so wired to see the world like that tend to not show much love for things Americana too fondly.

I love the movie and wish we would get more like it. Don't understand the criticism of Liotta's portrayal. Always thought it was fine. Here is the real Shoeless Joe swing:

Well it was supposed to be Salinger, on whom Mann is loosely based. I think they just crafted a new reclusive literary/cultural icon from a relatable period (60s activism) and went with it.

But I think it works. The whole idea is that Mann shouldn't be a nostalgic baseball purist given his work, but he is, and he intentionally hides it. Which is probably true for plenty of radicals of all generations who suppress their fondness for traditionalist things.
