The king of this category, as far as I'm concerned. For a while there in the late 80's and early 90's, it seemed like he was the bad guy in every kids' movie being made.

Martin Balsam is one of my favorites. Just off the top of my head, he was in 12 Angry Men, Psycho, Breakfast At Tiffany's, Cape Fear, All The President's Men, Catch-22, and St Elmo's Fire. He also popped up in a ton of TV shows in the 60s and 70s.

Plays the top Navy officer in Tora, Tora, Tora (1980)
One of the bad guys in 1974's version of The Taking of Pelham One Two Three.
In Little Big Man (1970) with Dustin Hoffman.
Plays the managing editor of The Washington Post in All the President's Men (1976)
Plays a Mexican in Hombre (1967) with Paul Newman.

He has an uncredited role in On the Waterfront (1954). That's him with a tie, smoking a pipe. I think he plays one of the two cops that come to question Terry after Joey's murder,

Powers Boothe (R.I.P.)

Not sure he really fits the character actor.

Won a best actor Emmy and nominated for various other awards along with being one of leads in a popular HBO series.

Regardless,a great actor that should have been a bigger star.
