You know, the guy who isn’t a leading actor but you have seen them in everything. When they appear on screen you go “Hey it’s that guy!” The type of actor that whenever they appear in a movie you know that the scene is in great hands.

Powers Boothe (R.I.P.)

Kurt Fuller

Kevin Dunn

George Buck Flower

Two of my favorites are both gone now. J.T. Walsh and Pete Postlethwaite. I'll throw in John C. McGinley and Bruce McGill.

Harry Dean Stanton

Very rarely a leading man, but has been in a ton of things, and almost always makes any scene, show, or movie better by his performance.

Bad prison guard from Shawshank. Also Colonel Sink from Band of Brothers. A war movie doesn't feel right without him in it.

Jack Elam

quote:

He once described the career of a character actor. It went like this: “Who’s Jack Elam? Get me Jack Elam. Get me a Jack Elam type. Get me a young Jack Elam. Who’s Jack Elam?
