What movies did you have to see/hear first on your home theater system back in the day?

I'll go with:
Top Gun
A River Runs Through It
Last of the Mohicans

For our first DVD player, my dad bought a full home theater system with a 5 disc changer. The first DVD we watched was Terminator 2.

I had watched that movie so many times that I had nearly worn out the tape prior to that, but watching it with that setup was like seeing it for the first time.

True Lies, the Harrier taking off. Greatest display of surround sound at the time.

The Matrix

The lobby shootout scene is the defacto test for your surround sound system.

my first experience with surround is at my buddy's apartment in houston in the early 1990s where i would go over most evening to watch ST-TNG. i would sit on the floor (too cheap for decent furniture) and the ambient sounds from the Enterprise coming out of the rear surrounds AMAZED me.

that one tv show caused me to make up my mind to buy a surround setup as soon as i had the money.

Yeah, having different sounds coming from difference parts of the room was magical - even with a 27" low def TV

Simulated surround sound?

I imagine Top Gun predates the techniques used for surround sound. (Could be wrong though)

Yeah - cool setup! Just before HD was about to hit. I bought a 40” Sony tube tv in 2001 - it weighed 198lbs and was about 3’ deep

?

Four speakers and a subwoofer - really just stereo. But hearing jets fly from left to right In your own home was big stuff!
