Time to breath can be good. This was too slow, imo. That room made for lots of cool long shots, but this felt like the material was stretched for an extra half hour with all of the filler.
I think I'm the opposite
I hate fantasy and sci fi as a general rule. I love slow burn epics with great scores and sweeping, grand, dark visuals.
I loved this.

I liked it as a whole, but it had its flaws.
The first half was disjointed, which is mainly due to how much info that portion of the books has.
There are scenes that, in the book, carry more weight than in the movie because they are given more time and attention.
One being the scene where he meets the gardener who talks about the trees. That could have been deleted from the movie.
A lot of the disjointed nature of the movie is simply due to the character building. There are simply too many characters to allow for smooth transitions.
Otherwise, I liked the movie and 2nd half more.
A knit picky complaint of mine is how loud the movie was. There were bass heavy scores overlaid on every scene.
I wish movies would go back to having silence when they show space itself. Let the visuals do the talking.

I read the book in "Science Fiction English" in my third year at LSU. One of the best class's I ever took. I wonder if its still being read there since its the first book to win the Hugo Award and Nebula Award in the same year. Or if the class itself is still offered.

I watched it. Non book reader. It's been YEARS since I've seen the original.
I really loved it. Thought I wouldnt. Beautifully done. The visions were confusing at first but I caught on.
Watching with captions helped.

IMAX is the way to go for anyone interested, this is one of those movie’s that’s made for it with the cinematography and sound design.
I thought the film was excellent, maybe my favorite of the year actually. I’m a fan of the novel and the film encapsulated it really well. The 1984 one is good but very dated so I was excited to see what a director like Villeneuve could do. Some of the set pieces and scenery were just epic, that and the score really helped to give a sense of scale. I never truly got “the voice” so liked how they made that stand out.
The book itself is a slow burn with just intermittent action so that didn’t surprise me. I did think jumping right into the story was a great call, it’s exactly what the book did. You’re left to pick up things along the way about the many characters that are immediately introduced, the Imperium hierarchy and intergalactic politics, the Bene Gesserit, the spice, Arrakis and the Fremen, etc. You pick it up as you go though and are well versed by the end.
Dune is definitely going to get a ton of award nominations and wins. Excited they officially announced Part 2, that one should be a ton of fun with the way this set it all up.

I used to take my brother and his teammate to swim practice at Tiger Aquatics. So while i waited, I would go to Middleton and read Dune. It was up there on the second or third floor so I would pull it out, read, then put it back up when time to pick them up

I was thinking about that...but it makes it that much more crappy when House Harkonnen burns them to the ground during their invasion. They value nothing on Arrakis besides Spice.

I watched last night and I’m watching again tonight. This movie is fantastic. Someone in another thread compared it to seeing Fellowship the first time and how he was jealous he didn’t get to live that. I thought it was hyperbole. Not a chance. This movie delivered on every front for me.
To the ending haters, stop it. This isn’t the ending. You’re the same person who I said that about Fellowship of the Ring. It’s nonsense. The story isn’t over

Holy shite, unless you have a cheaper source than what I'm aware of that was a 100 dollar buzz at least

I was pissed Eternals bumped it out of the IMAX screens. Standard screen on my rewatch was a noticeable drop but still vastly superior to home.

Finally saw this today. Agreed that it drug a little at the beginning, but feel they got most of the back story covered.
Only complaint was Paul’s mother. She was a little weaker than I had hoped.

What the heck do you mean? I thought she was a perfect example of feminine sensibility and strength. And she killed some mofos with mind control too.

Needed more exposition for the Harkonnes. Major flaw. Why exactly are we supposed to hate them or why do they want to destroy the Atreides?

Her breaking down when Paul was tested. She broke down a couple of more times if I recall. Then, she badass throat slit the Harkonans in the thopter and kicked Stilgar’s arse.

There was a very high probability that her son was about to be killed as a result of her disobeying a direct order from the head of the Bene Gesserit.
I don’t think “breaking down” there is as much a sign of weakness as it is a foundational instinct of virtually any mother. Real tough to hold that against her.
