yes, read it twice. Im saying that oil in the middle east is a terrible comparison, because oil is on every continent on earth, under oceans, etc. Spice is only avaialable on one planet in the known universe.
This book is 100% a take on the rise of Islam in a sci fi setting.

And the Buddhism?

I’m a pretty big nerd and used to long historical and fantasy epics. This movie was painfully slow. Reminiscent of Blade Runner in that It’s beautiful, mysterious, and slow as molasses.

Not as much. Unless I’m missing something blatant, there is very little Buddhist stuff in Dune. Are you trying to say Paul represents siddurtha? For the first bit maybe but philosophically and story wise, that doesn’t carry through in my opinion

Nothing wrong with being slow

Time to breath can be good. This was too slow, imo. That room made for lots of cool long shots, but this felt like the material was stretched for an extra half hour with all of the filler.

I strongly disagree. It’s Eastern European in style but I love that.

That's like forcing Nolan to do a director's cut. They gave Villeneuve free reign to split it into two movies, if he doesn't want a director's cut there isn't going to be one. I don't believe he's ever done one and very much seems to be the type that the theatrical cut is his vision and how it should be seen. WB just pissed off and lost Nolan, they aren't going to repeat that again.
Also just because extra footage exists doesn't mean it's ever intended to be seen. Sicario apparently has an entirely different opening scene that was filmed then cut due to how it fit the story and not run time constraints.
The Snyder cut is an entirely different and unusual scenario.

Just rewatched. It’s even better the second time.
The fact that the Last Jedi has a higher RT score than this is hilarious. Regardless of the cinematography and other technical categories that Dune was better in, it actually treated the minority cast members as actual people and not perfectly moral gods opposed to the evil white people. And yet reviewers were afraid to rate it lower for that very reason.

I just finished it and it was beautiful but I don’t know wtf I just watched, lol. Y’all are beaucoup smarter than me, and I’m sharper than your average knife in the drawer.

Watched it in IMAX last night and was blown away. I read the books so having that advantage makes it easier to follow, but for this story to be put on screen is insanely difficult and I thought they did a fantastic job casting characters and designing the imagery.
I think the director and producers have to walk a fine line, all the prechapter narrations and slowly revealed explanations of prophecy and history are easy to just drop in a book, but that doesn’t work as well in a movie. I’m not sure how they could’ve done any better without doing words on the screen.
For those in this thread who kind of liked the movie but were confused, go read book 1 and see what you think. Having characters from the movie in your head to help you keep it all straight as you read it will really help you.

I honestly had the opposite feeling when watching. I looked at my phone thinking 15 minutes had gone by, and I was an hour into the movie. Found it engaging and deliberately paced, but I thought it moved at a nice clip.

I really enjoyed the movie and I’ve never read the books or seen the old movie. There were a few things I was a little confused on but I was able to piece it together good enough to not make it unenjoyable. Overall this movie peaked my interest enough that I think I’m going to start reading the books now

The first six books are some of the best sci fi ever written. The books after that weren't written by Frank Herbert so just keep that in mind.

Same thing here, at the end it didn't feel as long as 2.5 hours.

Just started watching after downloading a 4K torrent and the picture quality seems a bit odd. Can’t tell if somethings wrong with the torrent or it’s on purpose, but the film seems to be in sort of black and white with background colors changing.
I had assumed this film was going to be very visually appealing, with bright vibrant colors, but it is nothing like that. Should it be, and my torrent is bad?

It's a dark movie in parts for sure and that was my thought while watching it in IMAX..wondering how well my LED tv could handle that.
Eta having said that there are several 4k torrents out there. When this hits hard media we will get a proper remux version you can compare. The 4k copy I have is like 33GB I believe.

Question for the book readers…..
Why in the hell didn’t the soldiers use guns or blasters? The aircraft were armed and I know I saw anti-aircraft ground weapons, but why in the hell was everyone on the ground running around slicing and dicing like samurai?? Seemed like the advanced houses would have more sophisticated weapons.
Was this explained and I missed it?

Blaster interaction with their shields causes a nuclear explosion.

This is true, they didn’t explain it though. They figured it was enough to show people that high velocity ibjects can’t get through shields
