I think years of shitty movies has lowered the bar a lot.
This is a big issue no one likes to talk about. You can lay the never ending stream of shitty movies and remakes at the feet of Disney / Marvel and the PC Prog police.

Zendaya
Easily the worst part of the movie.

every character’s motivations (except Anton Sigur) are inconsistent and often contradictory.
1. Paul having contradictory motivations it the fricking point.
2. Everyone else is pretty consistent

This guy who played Elvis once appears to be playing Elvis in every role he’s in, including the bickered and dune 2, except he was doing an impression of skellen skarsgard in this one.
I dont remember Elvis talking like Skellen Skarsgard. Austin Butler was awesome in this movie and it makes
100% more sense for him to sound like Skarsgard than his normal voice

She’s not supposed to be either of those

I saw someone in another thread calling it on par with Star Wars/Empire Strikes Back

The guy that said this is Christopher Nolan. I'd imagine he knows a thing or two about making a movie.
Another person in the thread said it as if they were saying it. There is a difference between on par with and what Christopher Nolan said with it being "this generations" Empire Strikes Back.
It's clearly a great film. No denying. Just the hype is unreal.

Hot take: the first 1/2 to 2/3 of Lynch's Dune was just as good. It just fell apart after Paul joined the fremen. The special effects hold up, including the sandworms. Sting as Feyd >> Austin Butler as Feyd and I'm not kidding.
What about Thufir having to carry around a cat that he regularly milks for an antidote to a poison he was exposed to? Does that hold up as well?

Dune 1 was better. First 2/3rd’s of Dune 2 were slow.
About where I am at.
It was so much more evenly paced.
While Dune 2 needed to be as long as it was to cover everything, the first hour plus was a slog to me.

but the scattered clapping in the sold out theater did not feel as if I just watched one of the greatest sci fi films ever.
Lmao is this what you judge things on? It was very good.

Maybe my area of the country is more reserved than others because applause after a movie is something that I’ve never seen.

Fury Road was the last one I went to that I remember the audience having a visceral response.
Talk about a movie with 0 plot. 0. The characters literally end where they begin. Total waste of Hardy. Also, the first of the bait-and-switch reboots where they used a male IP to introduce a female-driven story to get butts in the seats instead of writing a completely new story set in the same universe.
Dune Pt 2 delivered in a way that hasn’t been done since LOTR. I was just stunned the entire time. Oh, and they didn’t sell it as Paul’s story to get butts in the seats and then make Chani the pivotal character. I was riveted for almost 3 hours and still wanted more.

If you think fury road was better than Dune 2 you’re flat out stupid.
Amen. Fury road is overrated dog shite. Literally a two hour car chase movie with some cool visuals.

Also , Dune 2 fricking rules. Paul is not a hero. You aren’t supposed to feel good about what’s happening. The next installment will be insane as well.

fury road

Yeah, that's what it is - those damned republicans.

I do chuckle internally at the feminist irony in telling Zendaya to smile, but, I mean...

I’m not a Star Wars fan but I know better than that
I'd probably have it over ESB. I realize I'm in the minority there but I'm just a big Star Wars (though I do love ESB). I'm not even arguing that it is better and I can appreciate what the OG trilogy did for film making in general obviously. I'm a fan of the book Dune so I am drawn to this story more. Just a personal preference.

Did you feel this way about the first one?

The first one of these or the first one from the 80's?
The one from the 80's flopped pretty hard at the box office. Honestly, I've always found it hard to get through in one sitting. Once they start whisper-thinking everything, I just tune it out. I think the only reason it still gets talked about is because it's part of the David Lynch catalog and because it has so many iconic actors in it (and Sting).
These new ones follow a modern trend in film. They assault the senses of the viewer in lieu of any real potency. Plus, they keep trying to shove Chalamet up our asses, and it's just not going to happen, not organically anyway.

I thought Chalamet was an interesting choice but he was able to have a weirdly commanding presence for a 90 pound twink
