So we must have been in the same class. Really liked that Mr.Sluggo was the tour guide and the one size fits all still suit was a ziplock bag.

Wait, really? Our project was actually a slide show, and there were three of us (can't remember the other guys' names).

Crazy that we were in that class together.

I mean, I thought Sicario was great, for sure, and Arrival is good.

"Brilliant" needs a little more doesn't it?

It's fine if you didn't like it, but the film received universal acclaim from both critics and audiences.

Meh. The original film was slow out of the blocks, commercially and critically, requiring a number of "Director's Cuts" to finally sort itself out as one of the greatest films of all time.

Not all on Villeneuve, of course, but the sequel (for all its visual appeal and technical charm) just doesn't have much in the way of story, or relatability and was laden with sub-par performances (Ford and Leto, notably), with really only Hoeks and Armas standing out for me (and I liked Gosling's performance, because I'm fairly certain that was how the character was written and directed).

Even the brilliant (accurately used here) Roger Deakins couldn't shoot a great film that wasn't there.

(ETA: And my apologies for derailing the thread - I still think relevant because of the director, but frankly, as much as I liked Lynch's Dune, I think Villeneuve has the potential to deliver an improved product. So, I will concede his ability at least on that point.)

From what I read, a large chunk of the movie takes place before the Atreides leave for Arrakis, which is interesting.

The danger here is if it focuses on style over action. Modern audiences demand a certain ration of action beats in a product like this. If they get too involved in world-building, it may harm the long-term financial viability of a series of films. (And, frankly, in 2021 - I think the Dune source material would be better done over a 2 or 3 season series on a streaming service, preferably HBO or Netflix).

I would love this. Could you imagine them getting to God Emperor in the series, and the audience reacting like "What is this? What is happening? What the frick is happening?"

Absolutely. But IP like this is considered "too valuable" not to try to do a megabillion franchise or at least trilogy around.

That mode of thinking is changing, albeit slowly.

Fully expect it, unless it epically fails which i don't see happening.

Especially after how entertainment starved people have been. Thats probably an extra 100 million domestically just right there.

And I hope its good. It would be nice to have things to look forward to.

That's what made the 84 movie, which I absolutely love, so strange and different from the book. They wanted Dune to be the next Star Wars.

Dude the whole point of the story was what does it to be human and be loved, to have a place in the world.

How is that not relatable?

The score sounds phenomenal. I think this will be amazing entertainment given DV’s ability to use special effects powerfully in his films.

This is such a difficult novel to translate to film, but it looks like this could be close.

Not crazy about the Kynes situation, but I think they can get around it.

It's gonna really suck if they don't make the sequel to complete the book.

Anybody got some extra Spice Melange? Asking for a friend...

I've read all the Dune novels multiple times (yes, yes...even the damn prequels. Sue me) and watched the Lynch version of the film so many times I actually broke my VHS tape of it. So ya, I might be a bit excited about this.

Villenueve is an amazing director, and with the exception of Kynes they absolutely nailed the casting and "feel" of the film.

I really don't remember. Years later I found the cassette soundtrack we made. One of the guys was supposed to dupe the slides for the rest of us but that never happened.
