Paul Ritter absolutely kills it as Dyaltov. Sadly, the actor was not able to capitalize on his success as he died not shortly after from a brain tumour.

Maybe they didn't need actual radiation in the scene.

Great example of the unfeeling universe and all of us ants scrambling to survive. Almost Lovecraftian.

It's almost hard to imagine that the writer of this is the co-writer for The Last of Us. How do you go from something this great to that turd level writing?

What should blow your mind more is that the show is directed by Stakka Bo

I’ve never been more stressed out by any TV series quite like this. which is super impressive considering most of us had a pretty firm grip on the story to begin with

I have it as my third best miniseries of all time I think (the OG Planet Earth is my #1, Band of Brothers is #2). It is excellent.

The scene where they are in court (or wherever) and explaining what happened with the blue and red note cards is phenomenal. They explain what happened in the most basic and understandable terms possible. Loved loved that scene.

I haven’t rewatched it in full since it came out. May have to fix that soon.

My husband ordered the DVDs last night. We haven't had the TV on very often the past couple of months.

I've been putting this series off as I've been on the fence about it but this thread has me wanting to see it now.

It's a must watch. The board rarely agrees on anything anymore but this is one that is kind of universally agreed upon that it's one of the best mini series of all time. Don't know if I've ever heard a person say they dislike this.

Not a spoiler but on this rewatch I do find myself wishing they would have had Russian actors not Brits. The acting is incredible with so many great performances and not having Russian actors is not a drawback but I think it would have added a little more punch to the authenticity having the right accents.

I think the actors being able to deliver the lines in their native language (except Skarsgard) is a big plus.

Finished the rewatch last night. It takes literal ages to finish a series with Mrs. Iwy because she doesn't like watching stressful stuff before bed. SO two weeks later we finish a 5 episode mini series.

The wifey now understands why I have raved about it and tried to get her to watch it for 6 years. Man this show got better and better with every watch.

For whatever reason, the finale was always the least memorable episode for me, but this go around it really stood out. The court room scenes were so well done. Breaking down how things built up and played out down to the second was just so good.

The conversation with Boris and Valery outside during break was an all timer too...

Boris Shcherbina: Do you remember that morning when I first called you? How unconcerned I was? I don't believe much that comes out of the Kremlin, but they told me they were putting me in charge of the cleanup. When they said it wasn't serious, I believed them. Do you know why?
Valery Legasov: Because they put you in charge.
Boris Shcherbina: I'm an inconsequential man, Valery. That's all I've ever been. I hoped that one day I would matter but I didn't. I just stood next to people who did.
Valery Legasov: There are other scientists like me. Any one of them could have done what I did. But you... everything we asked for, everything we needed; men, material, lunar rovers. Who else could have done these things? They heard me, but they listened to you. Of all the ministers and all the deputies. Entire congregation of obedient fools, they mistakenly sent the one good man. For God's sakes Boris, you were the one who mattered the most.

I mean, if you want more authenticity, they should speak Russian and you should have subtitles on, but most Americans can't read fast enough for that.

I didn't mean have the actors they used to do fake Russian accents like it's the Thunderbolts crew, I mean having Russian actors.

Just watched this for the first time (didn't have HBO until few weeks ago)
I've read Midnight in Chernobyl recently so had the most detailed background on it coming in

It was awesome, especially the first and final episodes
They did overdramatize some of the initial stuff with the timeline of the burns but it made for good TV
Even now you have to feel for the firefighters walking into that deathtrap

Same. I've read Midnight and listened to a few podcasts. Had not seen it in its entirety, though at some point I'd watched the first two episodes. Very good. Doesn't quite climb the mountain to 'great' for me, though it certainly has its moments. There's just so much ineptness within that bureaucracy. The final death toll number from the government is still hard to believe, even if you grew up in the '80s and understand how inept/stubborn the Soviets could be.

I've watched it a few times. HBO is the absolute goat of the "limited series" format.

Band of Brothers. The Night Of. Mare of Easttown.

Chernobyl ranks right up there with the best. If I'm ranking I'm not putting ahead of BoB. But it's right there.

A few that haven't been mentioned this thread: John Adams, Generation Kill, Watchmen....all thoroughly entertaining. John Adams probably doesn't get enough love.

Finally getting around to starting this and holy shite. I just finished episode two and as someone else noted, this is the most stress I've felt watching any show or film.

This was long before my time but man, I can't even imagine what it must have been like following this story when it happened.

Nice, glad you like it. It's intense, especially the first two episodes. I mean all of them are stressful but especially the first two and the last. Everything in between is still top notch TV.

On the rewatch I did have to skip over the Barry Koehgan/dogs scenes. Mrs. Iwy was not up for that. I don't blame her.

Stellan Skarsgård was also fantastic in this. I love the scene where he is screaming on the phone because a German rover died due to radiation exposure it wasn't meant to operate in. The Soviets gave everyone the propaganda radiation measurements which prevented other counties from being able to supply them with proper equipment to stop the leak.
